The Woman and Her Seed

What I really enjoy about Avent Hope is that every time I come, there seems to be a new face that I've never seen before.

And I'm happy to be a part of this group, even though I'm not here physically most of the time, but I have a lot of connections with friends and Avon Hope will always be in my heart.

And this Sabbath is a special Sabbath, isn't it?

Actually, I have to confess, I usually don't put too much of my money in holidays and special events like this.

I rarely have special Thanksgiving sermons or Christmas sermons or New Year sermons or even Independence Day sermons or whatever.

But today, we are going to talk about the birth of Christ.

But perhaps in a perspective, in an angle that you may not have heard it presented before.

Maybe you have, but I believe that this Bible study will be very insightful to all of us.

The title of our sermon today is simply called, The Woman and Her Seed.

But before we open the Word of God, I'd like to pray for myself and for all of us.

Father in Heaven, we thank you for giving us another year, another day of life.

Today, as the world celebrates Christmas in the way that the world celebrates it with spending money, with hurrying around, with stress, with decorations.

With all of these things, we want to remember that Jesus Christ came to this earth to be our Savior and to be our example and to be our brother.

So today as we study Just for a few moments on this most magnificent theme, help us to learn what it means to be the seed of God.

To begin our topic, I want to ask you a question.

Where is the first time, or where is it found for the first time, that Jesus Christ, or the Savior of mankind, was prophesied.

I believe this is 1 of those texts that we have memorized whether we like it or not.

I want to start there and this is going to be the platform, this is going to be the launchpad for the rest of our study this morning.

We will see the beautiful promise, the promise and the prophecy of the end of sin.

Genesis 3.15, After Adam and Eve had eaten of the fruit and have sinned against their God, they came before God and God had already cursed the serpent and this is what God is saying to the serpent.

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed.

It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

But I want to go on just 1 more text, because very often we stop right here.

But the promise continues the prophecy continues in verse 16 it says unto the woman he said I will greatly multiply by sorrow and thy conception in sorrow thou shall bring forth children and thy desire shall be to thy husband and he shall rule over thee." Let's pause there for a moment.

God is saying, man and woman, you have sinned, but I will provide a savior in the form of 1 of your children.

And this seed will come and crush the head of the serpent.

But I want you to notice that it is in direct juxtaposition with the promise to the woman, or the curse I may say, that she shall bring forth her children with great sorrow and pain.

God is telling the serpent, the woman is going to have a child and this child is going to crush your head.

But then he looks at the woman and says, but you will bring forth this child with great pain and sorrow.

And this child that comes forth will crush the head of the serpent.

And then, after God says, there is going to be hope, this will have an end.

And then He says to Adam, because of your sin, by the sweat of thy brow you shall eat bread and the thorns and the thickles and thistles and all of these things that sin will bring as a result then he explains the horrible results of sin you see God is is is interested in giving us the assurance of His mercy and His justice.

He first made sure that we understood that there is hope at the end of this journey.

He wanted us to understand that Jesus is coming before we get worried about, oh the roses have thorns, we have weeds in our garden, I'm gonna get sick, I'm gonna get old.

So we see here the first promise, the first prophecy of the Savior.

You can look this up later, Galatians 3 verse 16 and verse 19.

Actually why don't we just look there now, I think we have some time.

Galatians 3 verse 16, now to Abraham and his seed with the promises made he saith not and to seeds as of many but as of 1 and to thy seed which is Christ let's go to verse 19 wherefore then serveth the law it was added because of transgression till the seed should come to whom the promise was made and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator clearly based on Paul's writing to the Galatians Jesus Christ is the seed that was to come to save mankind but we already understand that I want to go deeper than that.

You see, Advent Hope is a place where I feel I can dig a little deeper, as the old gospel song says.

And I want to bring your attention now to the book of Revelation.

Revelation chapter 12 explains to us, gives us a picture of the fulfillment in the person of Jesus of the promise of Genesis 3.15 and Genesis 3.16.

Let's look in Genesis or Revelation chapter 12, beginning in verse 1.

Revelation 12 and verse 1 it says, and there appeared a great wonder in heaven.

And in Bible prophecy, a woman represents what?

A woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet, upon her head a crown of 12 stars.

And notice verse 2, and she being with child cried doing what travailing in birth and pained to be delivered Doesn't this sound like Genesis 3 verse 16?

To the woman God said, in great pain and sorrow you shall bring forth your children.

And here we see the woman of Revelation 12, travailing in birth and pain to be delivered.

Verse 3, And there appeared another wonder in heaven.

And behold, a great red dragon, having 7 heads and 10 horns and 7 crowns upon his head.

And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth.

And the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered for to devour her child as soon as it was born." Now, can you give me another name for the red dragon?

I'll give you a hint, Revelation 12 verse 9.

The serpent, this great red dragon based on Revelation 12 verse 9, that dragon, that devil old serpent, this is the same entity, same person that God is talking to in Genesis 3 verse 15 and here this dragon this serpent is is standing right before the woman This woman is crying in pain because she's about to give birth and this child, the serpent wants to devour.

Because this child is gonna crush his head.

This dragon is trying to destroy this baby, the seed of the woman, because this seed is going to destroy Him.

And when was this historically fulfilled?

In the life of Jesus, during the time before He was born, who was represented by the woman?

And it was during this time that this woman was in great travail.

It was at this time that this Jewish nation was under the persecution and the oppression of the Roman power.

The pagan Roman power, or let me just put it in this term.

They were being oppressed by the then world superpower.

It was during that time, during that persecution and oppression by, shall I say, the legs of iron, the dreadful beast of Daniel 7.

Come on, you've all been through Daniel for 13 weeks now, you know what I'm talking about.

It was during that time that this woman was being persecuted.

It was during this time that it is called the travailing in pain to be delivered.

And during that time you remember Herod heard from the wise men there was this baby That's supposed to be the king of the Jews.

The dragon using, follow me now, The dragon using the mode of the political power of that day, trying to devour the seed of the woman.

You have to follow me closely now because there is significance to all of this.
