A Better Sacrifice

The Bible says, And Adam knew Eve his wife and she conceived and bare Cain and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.

And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And in process of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.

And Abel he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof.

And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering.

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.

And Cain was very wroth and his countenance fell.

And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth and why is thy countenance fallen?

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?

And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door, and unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shall rule over him.

And Cain talked with Abel his brother and it came to pass when they were in the field that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him.

And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother?

The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand." In this passage we have recorded the birth of Cain and Abel, the first 2 boys born on this earth.

We learn that Abel was a keeper of sheep.

They both came to God bringing sacrifices.

Cain was angry beyond control and ultimately took his brother's life.

And God came and asked a very, very searching question.

The question was, Where is Abel thy brother?

Now I want us to go back over that passage, Genesis chapter 4 verses 1 through 11, and I want you to see something that is mentioned 7 times.

And Adam knew Eve his wife and she conceived and bear Cain and said I have gotten a man from the Lord and she again bear his brother Abel.

And Abel was a keeper of sheep but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering, but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.

And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth?

And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door, and unto thee shall be his desire and thou shalt rule over him.

We saw once in verse 2 and she again bare his brother Abel.

Verse 8 and Cain talked with Abel his brother twice and it came to pass when they were in the field that Cain rose up against Abel his brother 3 times and slew him.

And the Lord said unto Cain where is Abel thy brother 4 times?

And he said I know not am I my brother's keeper?

The voice of thy brother's blood clath unto me from the ground.

And now art thou cursed from the earth which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand 7 times.

Is it because we don't know that if 2 boys come from the same mother and father that they're brothers?

In Genesis chapter 29 you don't have to go there from verse 31 down to verse 35 and then chapter 30 from verse 1 to 24 we have the record of the birth of the 12 sons of Jacob minus Benjamin who was born in chapter 35 verse 18.

We have the record of those 11 boys not once are we told that 1 was brother to the other.

And so Leah she bore Reuben, then Simeon, then Levi, then Judah, then a concubine bore Dan, and then Naphtali, and then Leah came back and had Gad and Asher all the way down to Joseph.

All of these not once are we told his brother.

But in Genesis chapter 4 where we have the birth of 2 boys, where it was 7 times.

His brother, his brother, or thy brother.

Have you ever wondered why God made 2 adults and everyone else who came into this world came as a baby?

Now if God can make 2 adults, He could have made 6000000000 adults and just populated the world.

But He did not do that for 1 reason, a very very critical reason.

It is God's design and it is God's desire that after Adam and Eve all people who come into the world would come into the world in a state of dependence.

I am told in the animal kingdom and I include human beings in that kingdom the most helpless offspring is a human baby absolutely dependent on the mother with all due respect to the fathers.

God's design, I repeat, is that we come into the world dependent on other people.

And so the baby has to be breastfed, the baby has to be protected, But the baby is also dependent on the father and on the mother and other brothers and sisters and all those who comprise the household.

The baby is dependent on them for the formation of what?

This is very serious because what the Bible tells us is simply to a large degree who I am depends on someone else.

When my father was alive nothing made him happier than to have a book in a quiet corner away from everyone else, reading.

As I grew up and I got to know myself, it became evident to me that 1 of my greatest delights is to have a book and a quiet corner somewhere reading.

Now the power of influence, the influence.

The moral responsibility we must feel for the influence we exert on other people.

There was an elder in my church who had been sick for 12 years.

And in those 12 years the only book he read was the Bible.

As a result of that when God raised him up he had amassed a vast store of Bible verses in his head.

Now I was about 12 or 13 and every time that man got up to preach he preached from his head.

And as a little boy I watched him and I was fascinated and he never knew that and I said I would like to do that.

Put God's Word in my head and preach and bring the God's Word out of my skull.

I was influenced by the behavior of another human being.

I was over there 2 years ago conducting a week of prayer and she observed how I preached.

She went back home and she and her 3 sons began what?

She said, I have finished 1st John, now I'm moving on to Philippians.

He had called an evangelistic school called Arise in Michigan, run by David Asher.

He said, I want to learn how to memorize scripture.
