A Match Made on Earth

Any of you know what October 22, 1844 is?

That's when it happened, 171 years ago to today, March, the Great Disappointment anniversary.

So today's message is going to be entitled something similar to that.

The theme of the meetings is called Matched.

Now the sermon is entitled the following.

Match made on earth, not being disappointed in finding Mr.

Not this guy, but right here, this girl with the hair.

And yeah, it's been an amazing experience.

I want to talk a little bit about marriage, about dating, about courtship.

This seems to be a popular topic amongst Adventists or Christians or anyone that likes the opposite sex or is attracted to, this seems to be a very popular topic.

So we're going to talk a little bit about this, what the Bible talks about, and the spirit of prophecy talks about courtship and marriage and such things.

But before we go into it, let's go ahead and say another word of prayer.

My Father which is in heaven, I know time is limited.

So I pray that you may give me speed, but you help me to speak with clearness.

That everybody will be able to understand.

So please bless us I pray in Jesus name, Amen.

Alright you guys are really looking concerned right now.

A number of months ago, how many of you get Yahoo News?

A number of months ago, short of a couple of months, there was an article that was posted up in Yahoo News that a groomed, he just got married, in that wedding night, you know, the next morning of their marriage he woke up to his wife and he's, and he freaked out.

This is the first time he saw his wife without makeup.

So literally what he did was he decided to sue his wife for fraud.

That, you know, this is not who I married, this is the first time I've seen you, and right away he was like, I need a divorce, I'm going to sue you, because you tricked me.

Today in society we're finding that there's many couples, the statistics say that 50% of married people get a divorce, and that is even in the church, those statistics are so.

Well, the signs of the time is for sure that's happening.

The things like we just read like that article the Bible says this As in the days that were before the flood, they were eating and drinking and marrying, and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark.

So Jesus says, just like it's going to be in the days of Noah, that's how it's going to be, the condition of this world is going to be when Christ comes back.

Notice how the condition of the world was during that time.

The Bible says in Genesis 6 verse 1 it says, And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair and they took them wise of all which they what everybody chose so back in Noah's day the men back then decided that I'm gonna choose who I want to marry regardless of what God thinks regardless of what God says regardless of God period I'm gonna do what I want to do and as a result the Bible says that their minds was wicked continually.

Their imaginations, all they thought about was wicked things.

How many of you would want to choose your husband and your wife without regarding God?

Notice this quote that talks about the need to meet a match, not just a mate.

Few have correct views of the marriage relation.

Many seem to think that it is the attainment of perfect bliss, but if they could know 1 quarter of the heartaches of men and women that are bound by the marriage vow and chains that they cannot and dare not break, they will not be surprised that I trace these lines." Notice what she says here, marriage in a majority of cases is a most galling what?

All right, after reading this quote how many of you are really interested in getting married?

Marriage in a majority of cases is a most galling yoke.

There are thousands that are what, everybody?

Notice what she continues to say in Adventist home the books of heaven are burdened with the woes the wickedness and the abuse that like hinted under the marriage mantle this is why I would warn the young who are marriageable age to make haste how friends Slowly in the choice of a companion, the path of married life may appear beautiful and full of happiness, but why may not ye be disappointed as thousands of others have been?

Alright, so this is a huge solemn quotation that basically says if you are a marriageable age take your time don't rush things are you guys with me she says thousands are mated but not what matched not match she says How many of us like being disappointed?

How many of you have ever had or received a broken heart?

All right, how many of us have ever received a broken heart?

All right, yeah, how many of us like being disappointed?

Yeah, none of us like it, but a lot of us have gone through it.

It's because many of us are following the customs of the what?

Many of us watch this nice sitcom on television and everybody, you know, the relationships always seem charming and beautiful and exciting and lovely.

Why is it that there are so many thousands of people that are mated but not matched is because we're following the customs of the world.

Notice this quotation, Alan White says this, Satan is busily engaged in influencing those who are wholly unsuited to each other to unite their what everybody?

He exalts in this work for by it he can produce more misery and hopeless woe to the human family than by exercising his skill in any other direction.

Alright so the devil knows that if I could get 2 people together that are not supposed to be together, I could cause more misery and woe than in any other thing I can do.

A Match Made in Heaven

And we found out that 1 of the signs of the times, Jesus Christ said that during, before he comes back, it's going to be very much like the times of Sodom and Gomorrah and also like the days of Noah.

And if we study out the days of Noah in Genesis chapter 6, we find that what were the men doing during that time?

You know, they were choosing whoever they wanted.

They weren't searching the Scriptures or trying to find out what God's will was, they were just doing whatever they wanted.

And the Bible says that their minds became so wicked, their imaginations was wicked continually, that God eventually just destroyed the earth.

Friends, we are getting to that time where it's coming like Noah's days, like Sodom and Gomorrah, where men and women are doing what they want outside of the will of God.

Well this morning we took a look at how is it that we could go through life and finding that Mr.

1 of the principles that we learned was if you don't want to be disappointed in finding mr.

Right you need to first be married to Jesus can you say amen to that first be married to Jesus he is the 1 The Bible says that in Isaiah 54 that He is our maker.

The Bible says in Jeremiah chapter 3 that we are married unto Him.

So if we want to go through life finding the right person, first find the only righteous person.

Have an intimate, powerful, real relationship with God.

Number 2, find out what God's calling is for your life.

We saw that God made Adam to tend the garden, to take care of the garden.

That was his purpose, that was his mission.

So before Adam had a wife, before Adam had someone in his life, He had God, he was alone with God, and he had a mission in life.

The Bible also says that God educated him.

He said not to eat of a certain tree that's called the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

He educated him on how to do his work successfully.

Secondly, ask God, what is that calling that you have for my life?

Now, Did Adam find Eve or was Eve brought to Adam?

The Bible says in Genesis that Adam was what?

Help me, He knew that everyone else had a partner except what?

The only, The Bible says in Genesis 2 that God said, it is not good for man to be alone.

Adam didn't say, man, it's not good that I'm alone.

And as a result, God brought Eve to Adam.

And I liked the corny little thing that I brought into the sermon this morning was, well, What was Eve made out of?

So I like to say that when Adam saw Eve, she took his breath away.

And they lived a life, pretty good life, as long as they kept in the will of God, but they separated from the will of God and they fell.

Our story is how is it that we could find our match, just not our mate, our match, and that is by following those 3 or 4 points, and God will bring us to the right person.

Well, tonight's message is entitled, Match Made in Heaven.

And the subtitle I guess is Prophesy What Again?

If you can please bow your heads for another word of prayer.

My Father which is in heaven, I pray from my heart that You may please speak.

Father, I'm thankful for the opportunity of sharing your Word.

It's so sweet to be part of this last generation, this last movement.

It's so nice to know that, Father, we can see you come in the clouds of glory very soon.

And Father, I pray that you may prepare us for what is coming.

I think a lot of us are not, I think all of us here are not really ready for what is coming.

So please, Father, prepare me, prepare my friends.

Lord, 171 years ago, you entered the most holy place and have been interceding for our behalf.

Thank you, Father, for reminding us of what you've been doing and how you live to intercede for us today.

I want you to imagine it's 1844 and you are part of the Advent movement I mean you are believing with all your heart that Jesus Christ is coming maybe it's October or beginning of October and you've understood the Daniel chapter 8 verse 14 as Jesus Christ is going to come on October 22 and you were just thoroughly excited, thoroughly happy, you are selling everything you have, you're selling your homes, you're quitting your jobs, you're going up to the mountains, you want to get the best view of seeing Christ come and all your children are there.

And I remember there was a pioneer that was baptizing people.

It was in the wintertime and it was cold.

And he was baptizing people, baptizing people.

Well, he ended up getting sick and he ended up dying.

And his family instead of growing, getting into a depressed state, recognizing my husband's dead, my dad's dead, they were all happy in knowing that in just a few days they were going to see their dad again.

I want you to imagine that it's the day you're living in.

You're thoroughly convicted that Jesus Christ is coming perhaps in days.

And you are excited, you're a bit nervous.

You've searched your heart, you've been confessing your sins.

Enhancing Emotional Intelligence

Today we're going to be talking about enhancing emotional intelligence.

And this is really part of living the psychological good life.

I'm going to actually start out quoting from a philosopher that I agree with most of what he says on this slide, but I don't agree with everything that he says, and see if you can figure out the part that I don't agree with, if we get our slides working, or projector working.

So, you know, you guys are in, most of you I'm sure are in graduate school, so maybe you don't have to see it on a slide, just remember what I'm saying here.

There are many ways to demonstrate anger, and anyone can become angry, that is easy.

But to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way, that is not within everyone's power, and that is not easy.

It actually is once you learn the principles of emotional intelligence.

First of all, what is emotional intelligence?

It's understanding your emotions and the emotions of others and responding to those emotions in a healthy way.

It sounds pretty simple, but of course there are things involved with that.

1 of the reasons why we're talking about emotional intelligence as far as living the psychological good life is studies have shown that this has much more to do with your success and happiness than even your IQ does.

You know, your IQ was measured for many of you in taking the MCAT test.

You don't realize it, but that's actually an IQ test.

It's not really testing other types of things per se.

And of course that IQ test has some inaccuracies to it as well, it's not a completely accurate test.

And of course those that are studying for dentistry and other graduate schools, those are things that they're actually trying to measure in these pre-admission tests is your IQ in a sense to be able to handle the material that you're going to be learning and be able to be successful.

But studies show that IQ actually is not related to an enjoyable life.

That's why we have the term ignorance is bliss.

But of course, even that isn't quite completely true, because the effects of your ignorance eventually catches up with you, and you live some very non-blissful moments as a result of it.

But actually, what is much more connected to not only a happy life, but a fulfilling life is your emotional intelligence.

Now how I got involved in the area of emotional intelligence actually is because of our involvement in depression and anxiety recovery.

What we were surprised to find out when we were doing our pre-admission tests and our post-admission tests was not only that the depression and anxiety in the majority of people was gone in 10 days, but their emotional intelligence significantly improved in a 10 day period of time.

And in fact, most individuals that end the program not only end depression and anxiety free, but they end the program normally in the top 20 percentile of emotional intelligence.

That means that they are being placed, their brains are being placed in a position to be far more successful than people that have never suffered from depression and anxiety.

And so when I realized that, I thought, what would happen if we had people with good brains who were not depressed and anxious applying these principles?

And that's, of course, how we can have a great brain come about.

But 1 of the things that we actually do in our comprehensive program, in fact I was just lecturing to a large non-Christian audience, primarily agnostics and atheists just this past weekend up in Portland, Oregon.

And we were explaining to them the principles that we use to enhance emotional intelligence.

And 1 of the questions, it tends to be a common question, was you didn't mention anything about Eastern meditation.

You know, this needs to be something that I'm sure you incorporate in a comprehensive program to improve depression and anxiety and emotional intelligence.

And actually we don't, Not because we're not aware of the emotional or some of the effects of meditation.

In fact, 1 of the things I would encourage you to do when you're studying the results of tests of Eastern meditation is see if they actually looked for any adverse effects.

We actually have a speaker coming from Asia, a Zen, former Zen Buddhist, in our Emotional Intelligence Summit in February.

But he's actually going to be taking a look at that part that actually is, you know, there are certain areas of science that are actually not necessarily true science because they're not looking at it in the correct way.

And I could go into several of those things.

This is how myths are actually developed even in the scientific world.

But the Eastern meditation specialist that's coming is going to be talking about all of the various Eastern meditation techniques, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

And this is 1 area that in many medical and scientific journals, they never even looked for adverse effects.

And can you imagine studying a drug only looking at the efficacy, but not looking at side effects?

But this is, we actually do use a form of meditation.

But it's a form of meditation that I realized might have some healthy things meditation-wise when I was actually in medical school.

A number of years ago, 1 of my rotations I actually did as an elective up in Michigan when I was in medical school.

And I had a biofeedback monitor implanted on me.

It was actually a device that went into my ear, measured my galvanized skin pressure, and when I was under stress, the pitch would go up, and when I was not under stress, the pitch would go down.

And I was surprised at things that I didn't think were stressful for me, but I would hear the pitch go up.

You know, when I walked into a room as a medical student to do a history and physical, I didn't think I was nervous at all.

But all of a sudden, the pitch went up right before I went into that room and When it was rounds with the attending when he was gathering the students and the residents around him And he was starting to ask questions The pitch would start to go up in my ear and I thought I don't think this is really bothering me But in reality, you know it is And so then I would try to actually get it down low, as low as I possibly could.

And I would do things and imagine certain things and try to get the pitch down low.

But it wasn't until that evening, when I was, the first day that I had placed it, when I was in active prayer to God, that in the middle of that prayer I thought, I don't hear this.

And then I could realize, yes I do, and I've never heard it that low.

And that's when I realized that instead of Eastern meditation, which you're using mindfulness or mindlessness techniques to produce a self-hypnotic trance, that a prayer which utilizes the frontal lobe of the brain can have some very beneficial characteristics to it.

Now, in speaking about prayer, which is something that we actually utilize in our program.

Let's see, I think we missed this side of things too.

I'll just take it off of the presentation if we do ever get our slides working today.

But prayer is attempting to communicate with the divine.

And the book Education, which was actually written by 1 of the founders of Loma Linda University, in fact, the Secretary of Education in California said a few years ago that that book is far ahead of its time in regards to educational techniques.

And many of you are probably not aware that Loma Linda would not exist without this individual.

The church fathers were not for the building of Loma Linda University.

And it was under a tremendous persistence on 1 of the founders of the church that we actually have Loma Linda today.

But in the book Education, she talks about this as something that has to do with education.

She says, prayer and faith are closely allied and they need to be studied together.

Then she adds, in the prayer of faith, there is a divine science.

So in the prayer of faith, there's actually science there.

It is a science that everyone who would make his life work a success must understand.

Do you wanna have your life work to be a success?

I know I do, and I would think that many of you do.

And so this is something that you need to understand is the science of prayer and how this can actually help us.

Now, there are 5 components of emotional intelligence.

And that means to be able to identify precisely what we're feeling, but not only what we're feeling, but why we're feeling that way.

And if why we're feeling that way just has to do with the outside world or what someone did to us or said to us, we're not knowing our emotions.

Because it turns out our emotions actually stem from our thoughts.

Yes, it does have something to do with what happened to us, but it's our thoughts about what happened to us that actually bring about our emotions and then those emotions can then result in behavioral consequences.

So that's a big aspect of improving your emotional intelligence is be able to know your emotions and to be able to be completely aware of why you're feeling and what you're feeling.

People with low emotional intelligence are simply managed by their emotions, day by day, moment by moment.

People with high emotional intelligence still have powerful emotions, but they're managing those emotions distinctly different.

Recognizing emotions in others is part of emotional intelligence.

And this is why empathy has a role to play.

When we recognize emotions in others and we are emotionally intelligent, we will actually exhibit empathy, which is 1 of the characteristics that can also help in our relationships.

Managing relationships with others is the fourth aspect of things.

Sometimes this falls into the category called social intelligence, which is very intricately related to emotional intelligence.

And then the fifth aspect of emotional intelligence has to do with the word that's in emotion, And that's the word motion.

If our emotions are based on what's true and accurate, it will powerfully motivate us to achieve our goals and also powerfully motivate us to achieve and to carry out a sense of purpose as well.

And so this is also why some people with high MCAT scores actually don't do well in medical school.

They have the IQ to do well, but they didn't have the motivational aspect of things.

And so this is why it's more than just IQ, it's EQ as well that's intricately related to being successful even in a student environment.

Now studies have shown improving EQ can effectively prevent or treat depression, anxieties, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, and even addictions such as alcoholism, pornography.

But it also helps normal people think clearer, communicate more effectively, it fosters unity in group settings, reduces polarizing statements, promotes a happier life, And all of this is accomplished without compromise or sacrificing the truth.

Well, what are the influences on emotional intelligence?

Our childhood experiences have a role to play.

Our current level of emotional support has a role to play.

The Frontal Lobe and Self Control

You know, the first time I presented some of the information that you're going to hear today was actually at a secular psychiatric conference, where there was a lot of physicians, psychologists coming together for continuing medical education.
