Satan’s Trap: Chasing Rabbits

I've been traveling all day yesterday, so I'm trying to keep my eyes open.

I think he said that I was near Heartland, but I actually did come here.

I came here about, I think it was about 20 years ago.

Dear Father in heaven, thank you for a new morning.

Thank you that we have a chance to hear your word and to live another day.

And we pray for your blessing upon the things that we hear this morning and on your word, and especially on this whole weekend.

I think it was either yesterday or the day before asking me to squeeze in a 20 minute talk before other things that are happening this weekend.

So I thought about it and I thought, well, I'll feel guilty if I say no because I'll be tired and I've got a lot to do.

I want to talk to you about rabbits, avoiding rabbits.

How many of you, anybody have any rabbits?

Okay, how many of you don't like rabbits?

When I was a boy growing up in the Hollywood Hills of Southern California, I was not a Christian back then.

We had, I don't remember how many rabbits, but we had a little cage where we had rabbits on the side of our house and came to like them.

They were cute and not too difficult to take care of.

That was a long time ago and probably just about 3 months ago, I was driving through our little town, which is Priest River, Idaho, and I was with my daughter.

She's just turned 8, and my son and my wife, and we drove by a little store that had a sign that said, free rabbit.

So my little girl looked at that and she thought, daddy, let's go see the rabbit.

So we went inside and there was 1 rabbit there.

It was white, I think they called it a French lop, something like that, a pretty rare rabbit.

He had a cage, an extra cage, and he had some extra rabbit food.

So we thought, all right, we'll give it a try.

I wasn't planning, and my wife certainly wasn't planning on us keeping him for a long time.

But so we thought we'd take the rabbit, and my daughter was just so excited about having this rabbit.

And come to find out, this rabbit was pretty temperamental.

And sometimes he would kind of go like that.

And so we kept him for maybe 3 weeks and I cleaned the cage.

Then I put an ad on Craigslist and that was it.

Somebody picked up the rabbit pretty quick.

We made sure that whoever took the rabbit, the condition was that you don't eat him.

So they promised they wouldn't eat the rabbit.

I heard a story once a long time ago about a man who was not a Christian, And he had a wife who was an Adventist.

And the man, who wasn't a Christian, wasn't really interested in listening to what his wife had to say.

He wasn't interested in God at all, but he liked to eat rabbits.

And you probably know that people do eat them.

And so anyway, this man, 1 time he ate so much rabbit that he got sick.

And she said, honey, did you know that rabbits are unclean?

That the Bible says rabbits are unclean, you shouldn't eat them.

So he was interested in that because he had a stomachache.

And so he said, where does the Bible say that?

So she opened up her Bible and she showed him a verse where it talked about the rabbit or the hare, that this is not something you should be eating.

So then once he figured out that the Bible actually talked about rabbits and said don't eat them and he was sick because he ate too much rabbit, then he said, well what else does that Bible have to say?

So he started reading the Bible, and he became a believer.

Well, anyway, I'm just using all these little illustrations because I want to go somewhere with the whole rabbit idea.

Many people say, you've probably heard this expression, that people can chase rabbits.

We don't want to go around chasing rabbits.

And when they say that, they don't typically mean a literal rabbit, going out and trying to get a hold of 1.

They mean that people can be diverted from things that they should be doing by chasing rabbits.

I wanna show you a text in Hebrews chapter 12, verse 2.

Hebrews 12, verse 2, tells us that we should be looking somewhere.

And this doesn't only apply to 2, 000 years ago when Paul wrote this.

But I think as we get closer to the coming of Jesus, These words are very relevant to us.

Yeah, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." Jesus is now sitting at the right hand of God.

He has a bigger plan for us than we realize.

He's coming back again soon, and 1 of these days, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

And Jesus will be at the center of the universe's focus.

Everybody, fallen angels, unfallen angels, redeemed, lost, other worlds, at some point, Everybody is gonna be looking at Jesus.

And the Lord wants us to spend a lot of time these days looking at him by faith.

We don't know exactly what he looks like.
