Surprise Attacks, Part 2

Maybe to start out this afternoon, I'll start with a quote from a series of writings which I think that you would do well to read.

Remember we're talking a little bit about the history of Advent Hope and how it started back in, I think it was back in 2002 or something like that.

And we're talking about the history of Advent Hope.

And as I understood the history, as I remember sitting at tables and talking to students at that time.

We talked about the need to be more than just homiletical Christians And more than, in other words, sermon tasters that went around from place to place to listen to good speakers or whatever.

We wanted to be organically involved in actually bringing change.

At that time, they told me there were quite a number of people that go to Loma Linda universities are not, maybe not Seventh-day Adventist Christians.

Maybe they need to be introduced to the message, unique message of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which is all found in Revelation chapter 1, though, as you've been studying this morning.

Revelation chapter 1 starts with the scriptures, that you must read, hear, and then keep those, verse 1 to 3.

And verse 4 and 5 is talking about grace to you from 7 spirits from he who washed us in his blood that's the doctrine of what?

Made us kings and priests and saved us from our sins, not in our sins, but from our sins.

The third thing is verse 7, every eye will see Him.

And the next thing that comes is, I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, what's that?

And the next thing that happens is verse 12, what's it say in verse 12?

I'm walking among the lampstands, it's an allusion to the what?

Does the Adventist Church have a unique message, a sanctuary message?

Should you know how that connects with what you're doing every day?

Would there even be Loma Linda without the sanctuary message?

It might be under another name, but it wouldn't be a Seventh-day Adventist place, right?

So the sanctuary message, and then what comes next in Revelation 1, since we're studying that.

By the way, I was in an excellent Sabbath school class, which I know is there's room in that class.

I noticed there weren't too many people this morning.

Maybe there was a traffic jam or something at the post-dom house or wherever.

That's Jonathan Zirkle, had a lot of room in his class.

Does the Adventist Church have anything unique to teach about the state of the dead.

How many think the church has a unique thing that people on this campus need to hear about.

How many of you know what the spirit of prophecy says?

Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamus, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea.

So all through time God has had a church.

So Advent Hope was raised to remind people of these truths, yes, and not just remind, but live them out organically within the community.

So today I want to just do what we're told we're supposed to do with sermons.

Maybe this has not happened here but I'm not sure.

A minister may enjoy sermonizing for it is the pleasant part of the work and comparatively easy.

So have you ever noticed that ministers like to talk, they like to preach?

And a minister may enjoy sermonizing for it is the pleasant part of the work and comparatively easy.

So I tell my preaching students it's very easy to preach.

It's the pleasant part of the work, it's comparatively easy, but No minister should be measured by his ability as a speaker.

Minister should be measured by his ability as a speaker.

So if you were like this morning, said, you know we came back because it was such a great sermon and you're measuring me by the ability of the Spirit, that's wrong.

Or let's say you went to hear anyone else speaking on the campus, you say, oh, it's so polished, everything is light, every motion, it's from the land of Goshen, it's like, you shouldn't be measuring by that.

No minister should be measured by his ability to be a speaker.

The harder part comes in watering the seed sown.

He's sitting a further distance from me today than this morning.

So the job this afternoon is this morning we had a seed that was sown.

So now, this afternoon, we're supposed to be watering that seed sown.

It's supposed to spring up and have some kind of fruit.

That word, if it's based on the word of God, is not supposed to return void.

So the sermon, it's the seed, it's easy to plant a seed, but now what do we have to do?

We water it, we make sure it gets sunlight, we make sure that the soil is taken care of around the seed that's sown, and we hope that there's something fruitful that comes out of the sermon, some kind of fruit.

Like when, I don't wanna come back here next time and not hear that anything happened.
