Pre-Edit Audio Screening - Part 1

Our Heavenly Father, again I thank you for the very many blessings you bestow upon us, the things that we don't even think about that you give us.

We pray today, Lord, that what we talk about might be useful to any or all of us.

And that in the end, we can find volunteers and we can find information that's useful to us.

Lord, help us in everything we do and say that we are your witnesses.

I pray these things in Jesus' name, amen.

Going over quickly, we are talking about pre-screening audio files for Strongtow Radio and how much time it would save us, so we're gonna have lots of audio files to listen to and discussing some of the things that you might need if you're going to help us out.

Find an uncomfortable chair to sit in, and we're good.

A computer is probably high on the list of equipment that you want, because it'll probably be either a straight digital file or a CD.

Laptop, desktop, it doesn't matter as long as it will play those things.

You're gonna want a set of speakers or headphones, and the headphones with the tiny little band and the little foam pads, Those aren't headphones, those are junk.

You want something that's going to sound good enough so that when you hear it, it's clear enough.

Because I have heard audiophiles through speakers that distort the sound so badly you could tell us this one's absolute garbage, you can't use it, and then 1 of us listen to it and it's clear as a bell, it's all because of the equipment you're using.

So pick something that works fairly well.

If you're going to use headphones, get something that's comfortable, because we're talking about 45 minutes to an hour of listening time, Unless you're unfortunate enough to get 1 of those pastors that really likes to talk.

And then you could be spending more time.

You don't have to go around buying something like these.

A company out of New York, they've only been in business 4 years or so.

And these are lamb skin pads that actually are magnetized and they pop off so they can be replaced.

So The money you spend on them is worth it, if you listen a lot.

And I would highly suggest that if you're going to be doing this kind of thing, you find the most uncomfortable chair that you can to sit in.

Because I guarantee you, if you don't, in 10 minutes you'll be sleeping.

I'm not busy doing something, that's why I'm editing.

If I'm just listening, I'm totally sleepwalking.

Yeah, if you're actively doing something.

I'm gonna make a wild guess that as mostly guys in here we're not really fans of doing the dishes, that would be a good time to be listening to this.

With all of the Bluetooth speakers out there, there's any number of possibilities for you.

So at any rate, Find a place that you can listen that you're not going to fall asleep And I and I can't believe I'm the only 1 that would fall asleep.

So I'm just giving you from my point of view Yeah, there's Yeah, there's a...

The other thing I wanted to say is that it's good to take notes.

So, in that case, if you're a Q&A, it's taking notes, and it's somebody's like, this condition, and then you can type that up and share that with the editor, who may have also made it, so he knows where to go.

I know the other, you know, circuits are already musical scores that I've done.

I'm going to go right away, 38 second mark, this is off the left field, And that's the whole point of this.

If it's got problems or you notice something.

We want to know about as much as possible, it will speed up Daniel's editing time or whoever happens to be editing the file.

On the other hand, like I was saying, if the speakers that you're listening through aren't good enough quality to give you a clear sound, we may not find the same thing you do.

So just make sure you get something that really does give you good sound.

There's always somebody in the congregation who has something stuck in the back of their throat that they just can't get out, and you can't blame them for it.

But after about the third time I coughed I'd walk out and get a drink or something they just they persist which is great they don't want to miss anything but it can be a problem for the audio.

Baby's crying obviously there's not anything you can do about that.

Hopefully mothers or fathers who had me taking care of them would, you know, consider taking them out of...

If you happen to have a church where you've got railroad tracks or trucking firms parked near close, those are going to be a problem for you.

Some of that stuff, there's nothing we can do about, but those are the things that we need to have let us know.

As long as it's not during the words of the speaker.

We can cut out the spaces in between or blank them out, but if it's during, you know, the same time they're speaking, there's nothing you can do about it.

1 of the other things that we find really, really hard to deal with are the pastors who like to ask questions and like dialogue with the congregation.

The problem is you can't hear the answer.

Yeah, it doesn't sound like it's recording.

Pastor Pat learned that if he involved in a conversation, if it stops, you used to say, so evangelistic voice, great source of such and such, and I had to be patient.

The other thing, and first of all, I'm not a pastor, I'm not a preacher.

I will talk, but I like to talk with pictures.

And if you've got someone who's putting on a program like that, if they're not describing what everybody sees, it's really not going to be helpful over the radio waves.

So that's another area that we really need to pay attention to.

We talked a little bit about plosives, and you all have heard them on a mic, right?

It's any of those sounds made that have a lot of air behind them, the P's, the T's, the D's, the S's, anything that when you speak that sound, it gives a sharp exhalation of breath.

If they're talking directly into the mic, it gets picked up very well.

There's a lot we can do with that, but it's still something that would be helpful for us to know.

And to get around that, and obviously if you're listening to an audio file, there's not much we can do at that point to fix it.

But additionally, when you're talking about another language, I'm studying Spanish.

We went on a mission trip in March to El Salvador, and I would like to be a translator down there.

So I paid a lot of attention to those people that were translating either from English to Spanish or vice versa.

There's a whole lot of words being said to cover a few words in English.

So if you're trying to edit that in any way shape or form, you can't assume that at the end of that word, that's the thought.

So, there's a whole different world when it comes to that kind of thing.

Even Americans in this language we call English put the emphasis on the wrong syllable, right?

And when you've got someone who's trying to learn English, it can really get bad.

It can be 10 minutes later, you go, oh, that's what you were saying.

Everything you hear that doesn't sound right.

For instance, let's jump to some audio files here.

We're not sure what it comes from, but it's obviously feeding into the audio, and they may not hear it while they're recording.

I'm guessing he's probably not a professional speaker.

I don't think in that whole piece he ever got to the point he was starting to make.
