Heavenly Father, we thank you for your many blessings.

We thank you for this beautiful day that you've given us.

We thank you for, again, the opportunity to meet with fellow believers and to learn more about you.

We pray, Lord, that you send the Holy Spirit to us to open our hearts and minds to your love, your message, and also that you open our hearts and minds to the others around us, that we might reach out and touch those that need to be touched, and be wary of those that we don't need to be near, if that be the case.

Remind us always that we are your witnesses in everything we do and say.

I pray these things in Jesus' name, amen.

So, I've got a few more audio files, but it's not like it's stuff you probably haven't heard already.

All right, so see if you can tell me what the problem is here.

Distortion occurs when audio levels go beyond the capabilities of audio equipment or software.

It sounds like the audio is breaking up or like it's fuzzy and crackly.

Sometimes distortion happens only on certain words or phrases.

My voice is now distorting just occasionally, depending on which words are peaking beyond the capabilities of the audio system.

This is a common issue, especially when recorded in the field.

But at its worst, distortion can be continuous, impacting every word.

Distortion is very, very hard to repair once it's been recorded, so do your best to record with proper audio levels.

So I didn't hear specifically a point where it clipped.

Yeah, near the very end where he's talking about being continuous.

All right, and this is 1 everybody's heard.

To help us get a feel for what plosives sound like, I'm going to use 4 mic technique and hold a shotgun mic right in front of my mouth to record the following rather ridiculous phrase.

Plosives are persistently obtained when you're in a poor position, particularly when people forget the high-pass filter.

However, believe me, it's possible to prevent problematic closets with proper positioning and the high pass filter.

Now here's the same sentence recorded using 2 problem solvers to prevent those plosives.

I'll turn on the high pass filter on the mic and I'll place the mic just off to the side of my mouth at a little less than 45 degrees.

Plosives are persistently a pain with poor positioning, particularly when people forget the high pass filter.

Pleasingly, it's possible to prevent problematic plosives with proper I understand that the P's are easier to make, but you could have thrown in the rest of them.

Underneath my voice, you can hear little pops and other odd sounds.

I'm hand-holding a shotgun mic and I'm just adjusting my fingers a little bit on the mic.

Also, the mic cable is rubbing up against the cable in front of me.

I'll be quiet for just a second so you can take a closer listen.

Okay, I'm back and now I've put the mic in a shock mount attached to a pistol grip.

I turned on the high pass filter and I made sure the cable was free from touching anything so no matter what it sounds.

I'm still moving my hand on the disc, but you can't really hear anything.

This is why using a pixel grip and a high pass filter is the preferred method when working with a shotgun mic.

All right, let's see if we can make it hearable for you guys.

He's definitely more distant from his microphone.

And this is why using a pistol grip and a high pass filter is the preferred method So obviously if you've got somebody that doesn't know that, they can cause you all sorts of problems.

And the pastor's son, every time he'd just hold that thing, unless they had callus or something, you know, because it just, you know, ah, terrible.

It's, 1 thing though, it's got long teeth on it.

And you know, if they're not paying attention, they cuff the person up, side the head with a mic.

My voice is clear and present, as you'd expect.

But now I'm going to move off mic, and I'm just as close as I was a moment ago, but the mic's not pointing directly at me.

And you can already hear that the clarity and intimacy is missing.

For people listening to me in a car or on a pair of earbuds in the subway, this will definitely end up affecting intelligibility.

Okay, since we're in a studio, we've got a couple of mics in this room, so I want to show you what it can sound like when multiple mics are open and people are off mic.

I'm off mic again, and I just opened up that second mic across the table for my colleague, Siri.

So we both end up sounding pretty hollow.

Yeah, and you can start to hear the room a little bit.

So, you're right, it starts to sound roomy, air quotes.

But if we both stay on mic, the clarity and the intimacy return.

Keep an eye on your guests and remind them to maintain a 4-6 inch distance from the mic.
