Campus and Community Interventions for Wellness

Okay, so let's look at how we can take all this knowledge that we've been gaining through the years.

And I just want to make sure, is that the right screen?

Are you able to see that or do I need to swap them?

It's a privilege to be with you folks today and to share some insights And what I want to do is just partner with people and anybody who's interested in doing community interventions for wellness whether it's on your campus in your community wherever you're going to do them I want to share some insight and some trial and error that I've done through the years and we'll get started here.

So first thing I want to do is share with you the idea that conflicts of interest so I do not have any hidden agendas here I'm not trying to sell anything I'm not sponsored by anybody and I'm not in a sense bought and sold so to speak to necessarily to a certain philosophy.

I'm continuing to change and improve my understanding and knowledge of health.

And I really appreciated that presentation on the immune system and how we can stay top notch.

And so what I wanna do is how can we take information that we gain and then share it with other people you know whether it's just your neighbor or it's in a professional setting.

So the things we're going to look at today some of the learning objectives we're going to look at is the first thing we're the first part of the presentation is going to be about how to in a sense plan how to plan and get out there and actually do an intervention or some kind of a program for people and I want you to capture this idea of this acronym I came up with it's called the PIES approach okay.

So PIES basically stands for planning, implementing, evaluating, and then sustaining.

We spend a lot of time doing outreach and doing different types of interventions and different programs and things like that.

And I have to admit, I did them for years without much of a plan.

And it's in a sense, you need to look at, you're running a business, you need to have a business plan.

Now, I don't know if Bill Gates and Steve jobs and different people like that had business plans when they started out or how they did it maybe they winged it maybe they're super successful at it or they were successful at it but what we want to look at is I've spent a lot of time doing interventions and then you don't really know how effective they were or did you learn from them.

So you want to talk about we're gonna spend a fair amount of time talking about planning and implementing.

So it's plan, implement, you evaluate, and then how are you going to sustain that program when it's done.

So what we need to do is do that from the beginning of what are we going to do when this program's over.

So that's objective number 1, that's the first portion of the intervention or of the presentation today.

Second 1 is we're going to understand, I'm going to share some examples of things that we've done myself and the team that I work with, understand the impact of nutrition and foods interventions, how they can impact physical health.

I want to try to inspire you or encourage you to do something, okay, with the knowledge you have.

And then the other objective we're going to look at is how can these interventions actually help with mental health.

You know for years I've been looking at 1 dimension we just look at the physical health of people and we try to help them with their cholesterol or their triglycerides or different lipids and we look at those types of things and then what we find out later on is that there's other aspects that need to be included as well and sometimes we can do a more comprehensive approach with better planning.

Okay, so let's take a look at this statement here.

So we understand and we know and we just most of us like to dig into the books get the latest book that came out maybe read some journal articles be reading the latest media posts maybe what somebody's saying on Twitter and we just like these all this knowledge like to take in knowledge and we take it in and then in a sense we become very very big-headed so to speak and then what I like to say though knowledge is power but if we take that knowledge and share it, it is power multiplied And so many times that we get hung up back here and the knowledge is power and we think that we need more knowledge and more knowledge and more knowledge.

But sooner or later, we just got to jump in and get going.

I'm sorry, it is in the water, not on the land that we learn to swim.

And I remember back to some of the early interventions I did, I probably didn't do the best planning, I didn't do the best evaluating and measuring things.

But the bottom line is we need to get in the game and start get on the field and get playing here and let's go.

So the first thing we want to look at is where are some sites that we can be doing health promotion types of activities.

Now you may have some ideas of your own okay you can have people in your home My wife and I have opened up our home in the last couple years and we do cooking classes and health lectures right in our living room with our neighbors.

It's kind of interesting we have an island in our kitchen where we can turn the couch and the chairs and the dining room table.

We can turn them to face towards the island where we prep the food.

And we just do cooking classes right in our home now just to get to know our neighbors and to help out our friends that we see that we hike on these trails right out our door.

And so now we've been inviting people into our home.

Then when you can go outside of that, you can go into your community, you can think about schools, and I'll share with you a little bit maybe later on about how I now teach classes where I teach my students to go out into the community and do different types of health classes and things like that so we're in the schools here in town we're working closely with our hospital and medical system and in another area that we've been working real closely with worksite wellness.

So those are some of the areas you can and think about doing health promotion activities and planning your interventions.

What really motivates us to share the knowledge that we gain in our own studies, in our own experiences.

So for me personally, I feel the most alive, the most active when I'm actively involved in assisting others improving their quality of life.

And so these benefits that we bring to people by sharing the knowledge we have okay there's I think there's no greater way to be gratified and to be involved in sharing our gifts and our talents and our past passions where we're ministering to our neighbors our friends our co-workers and people in the community.

So I really feel like I become part of a community when I'm actually out there doing interventions not only in my home but out in the community co-workers I see people to this day in fact just last week we were hiking on a trail by our house here.

And I saw a lady several times and I just say hi to her.

And then finally we stopped and I said, you look familiar.

She says, yeah, I know you and your wife both here.

And she started talking with my wife and cause she was doing the demo part of the cooking part and so forth.

She says, yeah, I went to your first seminar that you did for employees 3 years ago.

And so it's really need to be connected to the community.

Here's the model that I wanna share with you if you're thinking about an intervention or if you're already doing interventions.

So this is part of the planning process and the implementation again then the evaluation and then how are we going to sustain that program once it's done.

So the first thing we want to look at doing we have some pre-planning going on you're looking at who your team is who's gonna be helping you who's gonna be involved are there sponsors to your program who's gonna fund your program but you're working on those types of things and then you start looking at the top 1 over here and the top here this assessing the needs.

Now I like to tell a story about my students about 2 years ago I was teaching this capstone class teaching students how to do interventions and then we don't actually go out and do interventions.

Well there's different segments of our population like most communities and then 1 section of our town is a little more upper class And then we have other areas that aren't as affluent.

And our students wanted to go into a school that was in 1 of the, what we would consider a little bit more higher social economic status.

And they wanted to go in and they wanted to do an obesity prevention program, an obesity, a childhood obesity program in this school.

Well, I knew from previous history that most of the students in that class or in that school were not obese.

Fortunately, this segment of the population was more active.

There was a lot of trails in that area there was pathways in there and people were biking and families were out and so my students they started planning their intervention before they had done an assessment.

So they were planning to go in there and they said oh and I was just sitting back and I was letting them learn this lesson so they went in there and actually did an assessment and they got some of the data from the school there and they were collecting BMI and different height weight charts and things for the students and they found out that less than 10% of the students were at risk for obesity in that school district.

And so they had to retract a little bit and say, well, maybe that's not the best intervention for this population.

And so many times we jump in and do an intervention because we think This needs to happen in this area and it's great to have excitement, but we need to do an assessment.

We need to assess the needs of this specific population.

And from that, then we start setting some goals and some objectives.

And then we say, what are the best methods or what develop the intervention, how are we going to develop the intervention to accomplish the goals to meet the needs of the people?

Okay, so then we develop the intervention, we actually do the implementation And then when we're done, we're actually evaluating.

So the thing is that we need to think about the evaluation process before we even begin so that we're collecting data upfront.

We're doing height, weight, we're doing measurements, we're doing lipid, we're doing attitudes, we're doing sleep quality, whatever it is we're gonna measure, we want to do that at the beginning and at the end and maybe even midway through this depending upon how long the intervention is, we want to go in and actually get that data and measure the people at the beginning, assess them, and then do it at the end at least okay then we evaluate that and then we say was that effective or not or do we need to change that do we continue to do this and so forth.

So that's kind of the what we call the blueprint or the background of how we're gonna plan intervention.

Now let me let me stop right here and say now maybe you're new to this and maybe you've never done an intervention and now you're gonna be discouraged because you're thinking I can't do all that okay.

Well the 1 thing to think about is there a team you can work with and also secondly what is already being done in your community can you partner with other people or are you gonna be a lone ranger?

Early on when I was doing interventions I worked a lot as a lone ranger and I've learned a lot more to be smarter as we go along.

I'm actually now partnering and I do things in teams where I include other people.

And you look at other organizations in your community that are maybe already doing something and you can partner with them and then it becomes more synergistic.

So the thing is the best thing to do is just have some kind of plan okay if you're new at this just get going get started do the best you can and then when you're done evaluate it and then next time improve on it and build upon that.

Here's another plan approach to public health that I was a part of back in I think 2005-2006.

This is 1 of the first major interventions I did.

We were in a small community in western Nebraska and we wrote a small grant and received $10, 000 from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska and we're doing a pedometer competition with 4 other communities in western Nebraska.

And So what we use there was called the planned approach to community health, which is a patch approach, which you do a needs assessment.

And we had discovered in our community that people were not very physically active.

So we had some data from the public health agency in town.

And we took and we said, well, let's just see if we can get people more active.

And so we put together a team of people, the lead agency, we had ad hoc committees for community leaders.

And we went in and we advertised to people across the spectrum of our community saying we are starting a grassroots movement of a pedometer physical activity program.

And the neat thing is we're competing against 4 other communities to see how many steps we can get on our pedometers in 5 months.

Now when I wrote this grant proposal I was pretty much a lone ranger but soon after that I realized I needed to get other people involved with me and so what I did is I wrote this grant proposal it was funded they gave us the pedometers and they gave us $10, 000 to roll out this physical activity program.

Well, I had planned for 350 people to show up because we only had about 7 to 9, 000 people in town, counting citizens and college students.

So There's only a town of 7, 000 people and about 2, 400 on campus.

So we only had you know less than 10, 000 people to draw from so I thought well we'll get about 350 people to show up for this and at the end of 5 months we'll probably have 250 people left over.

Well we did planning, we had the ad hoc committee planning weekly, we got a hold of the media, we even got into some of the faith-based groups, we advertise it across the community, we had I think it was 1475 people show up early and ended up having over 1, 500 people show up for this plan for this planned approach and it overwhelmed us and so we scrambled around and it was just 1 of the most successful things I've ever to this day still have done they have that kind of response And so it was just some planning up front, got the team together, and then we went down through this plan and unfortunately we ended up second.

We were second place, or as Nike says, we were first losers in the competition, but we still received another $10, 000 grant to keep the program going.

And as far as I know, I was back there this summer, they still have a very active physical activity program that I was fortunate to be part of that team that got that going.
