A Focus on Politics and Party

Let's pray together, then we'll have a little time of meditation in the Word, and then we'll go off camera and we'll pray together, okay?

Father in heaven, today as we've been listening to the news, maybe watching the news, we realize that our only hope really is you.

And we ask that you would honor the promise there in Psalm 107, if we cry out to you in our trouble, you'll save us out of our distress.

We ask that you would send your word and heal us tonight and deliver us from our destructions.

Oh, by the way, you know, some weeks ago, a friend of mine, John Crum, sent me an article and I could not find it.

I mean, I know I preached about it recently and I was like, I was listening to my own sermons on YouTube trying to find it And I was searching my computer.

Have you ever had that moment where you just can't find something?

And I was trying to find the article, but this article was an article on totalitarian states or strong leaders, maybe not totalitarian states, but strong leaders that are rising around the world because people feel nervous that they're losing their traditional value systems.

They feel like what they stand for is being threatened in the secular arena and in government.

And so they actually, they don't know what to do and so they gravitate towards people who promised great things.

And we've had people, not just around the world, but in America that promised great things.

There could be Democrats, there could be Republicans.

Change you can believe in was the last administration's mantra, make America great again is this one's, and there will be many others.

I can't remember even what the other 1 besides make America great was this last year, but there's always these lines that are simple answers to complex problems, and everybody gets their hopes up, and then they get behind somebody, and this is happening more and more.

In fact, in this article it said it's been happening for a number of years in many different countries, and you see many people that stand up and then the people, the people usually that's gravitating more now towards the cities.

In America a little over 50% of people live in the cities now instead of the country.

So they have a little edge when it comes down to elections.

So you watch an election, it looks like, oh man, the entire state looks like it's going that way, but then you just have these pockets of big population areas, and then once they count all the votes, it goes the other way!

And people are so invested because they so desperately want change.

And yet, they still want someone to help them, you know?

And so, in the study it said, this has been happening, and this is what it's gonna be like, according to the article I was reading, Harvard professor studying over a hundred different countries and looking at the same trend in all these countries and said, this is what it's going to be like for the next 30 years, she said in the article.

It's going to be a time, it's going to be times just like this.

The Bible kind of talks about it as a time of trouble, such as never was, since there was a nation.

And so, you know, it pictures it that way.

My dad, my dad was watching this, some of this with me today, and he said, wow, this is like a time of trouble, such as never was.

He goes, I've never seen something like this.

And, you know, there's that tension of looking at those signs and does this mean Christ is coming soon?

But then there's the other tension of, you know, he can't come until he's got a people to come for.

So either these signs indicate that he has prepared a people.

I don't know exactly how it's connected I'm going to talk about that other side of the equation this weekend what does it mean for us to be hastening Christ's coming right so anyway so you understand what I'm saying right So there's people that are desperately invested.

And this psalm came to my mind as I was listening this morning and I was listening last night to some of the news.

So let's read it first of all and then reflect a bit.

O my soul, while I live, I will praise the Lord.

I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Notice it doesn't say praise to other people or praise yourself, or talk about what you did, or talk about all your accomplishments, or talk about what other people, or even other leaders did.

Is this what we hear in political discourse?

We hear about why you should vote for me, why I'm so great, what I did, and how I did it.

Do not put your trust in princes nor the Son of Man in which there's no help, for his spirit departs and he returns to his earth, and the very day his plans perish.

But happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God, who has made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps truth forever, who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord gives freedom to prisoners, to the prisoners.

The Lord opens the eyes of the blind the Lord raises those who are bowed down the Lord loves the righteous the Lord watches over the strangers he relieves the fatherless and widow but the way of the wicked, he turns upside down.

The Lord shall reign forever, you your God, O Zion, to all generations.

Now that psalm just came to my mind, like this is the psalm for today.

This is a section, happy is he who has a Lord, right there through 9.

In other words, God is our only hope and we can trust in Him, those verses are saying.

Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help.

And even though he went through all kinds of trials, he was delivered.

And some, you know, Look at Psalm 20 just for a minute, it comes to mind.

Psalm 20, because it talks about Jacob, I believe, if my memory serves me correctly.

May the Lord answer you on the day of trouble.

May the name of the God of Jacob, may the name of the God of Jacob set you on high or defend you.

So Jacob was a surplanter, he was a cheater, he was talked into doing some bad things, But God delivered him and then he delivered the children of Jacob or the children of Israel.

And so what the psalm is saying back here in Psalm 146 is just as I delivered Jacob and just as I delivered Israel I will deliver you and you'll be happy if you look to Me for your help.

And your hope is in the Lord, His God." In other words, your hope is in Yahweh Elohim.

He makes the true discriminating decisions.

He's like the Supreme Court Justice, the ultimate.

He knows exactly what's going on and he's going to adjudicate things in a way that will not only make you happy, but you also, He will be your God, Elohim.

That means the mighty covenant maker, the 1 who's in relationship with you.

So the reason we want to trust in God as our only real hope is because we look back and see that He is our Deliverer.

But verse 6 reminds us He's not just our Deliverer, He's also He made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them.

He brought you up out of the land of bondage.
