The Faith of Jesus- Study Of Psalms 22

Well, tonight I want to talk to you about something else that I discovered on my trip.

You know, I was here a couple weeks ago and I was talking about the temptations of Christ and about how those temptations were our temptations.

And he was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

But there's no temptation you've ever gone through that he hasn't gone through.

And I wanna talk about that a little more because of another psalm.

I was telling someone about this message, it actually was Gary Gibbs, who's the president of the conference out there, and I was at his house partaking of some delectable chickpea sandwiches and, man, I almost can't taste those now.

And as I was partaking of those, we were talking about this, and he says, you know, I discovered something in Psalm 22.

And then I looked at Psalm 22 on the plane on the way home, and I had him send me his notes, but then I looked through it and I said, man, that is a powerful psalm.

So I have to share it with you before I forget it.

So let's pray and then we'll look at Psalm 22, if it's okay with Kevin Natchew.

Father in heaven, Lord, thank you today for the opportunity we have to actually feed on your Word, which is spirit and life.

If we want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, that means we need to be filled with Your Word.

It says in Psalm 107, verse 20, He sent His Word and healed them.

So bring healing, bring hope, and bring help to us tonight as we understand more about the faith of Jesus in Psalm 22.

Let me just start out by saying 1 of the texts that was on the head of the Review and Herald, which is a Seventh-day Adventist magazine, you know, for the entire existence of the Adventist Church, but for nearly a century, the text on the masthead was this text, Here is the patience of the saints.

Here are those who keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus.

This was at the top of this periodical for decades.

And I like to turn it upside down too, because the faith of Jesus, which is Faith is a fruit of the Spirit.

And of course, Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit more than all his brethren, because he loved righteousness and hated lawlessness, it says in Hebrews 1, verse 8.

So he was filled with the Holy Spirit, And he had faith.

To each of us, Romans 12 3 says, has been given a measure of faith.

And we can grow that faith, but he grew that faith, and then he promised to give us his faith, the faith of Jesus.

And then once we have that faith as a gift, we also are given the gift of obedience.

Whenever you obey, it's not something you do, it's something you allow Him to do in you.

And so he gets all the glory and praise for it, right?

And that's what it says in Romans 1, verse 5, the obedience of faith.

And actually in Romans 16, 26 it also talks about how the everlasting gospel is related to obedience to the faith and the keeping of the commandments.

And this happens actually under patient endurance.

The word there is hupopomone, which means under extreme pressure.

So the whole idea of the faith of Jesus is that you need that when you go through pressure-packed situations.

How many of you have ever been in pressure-packed situations?

And some of you have not, I can tell you, really been.

But maybe the most pressure-packed for you at your age, you know, or your station in life.

And I don't think even I've been through some of the things I've heard people go through.

I mean, Even on this campus, there's been people that have gone through genocides and gone through terrible situations and they've had to have the faith of Jesus.

So under extreme pressure, and here's to the promise.

For what the law could not do and that was weak through the flesh, God did by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh on account of sin.

So Jesus knew that you couldn't do it And so he sends his son to live in the likeness of sinful flesh on account of sin.

And he condemns sin in the flesh that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." How many think this is good news?

That He actually kept the law and can keep it in you through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Now I wanna give you something else here.

In Corinthians it tells us that God made him who knew no sin, that'd be Jesus, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him.

He comes in the likeness of sinful human flesh.

He has every temptation we have, Hebrews 4 tells us, 4.15, and he overcame them all but He also became them.

He overcame them, but then He allowed all of the penalty of sin to rest on Him, so you wouldn't have to take it.

Now I'm gonna talk about that more tomorrow because that is the heart of the third angel's message.

And we're gonna talk about how that actually works tomorrow.

But I'm excited about what I'm gonna talk about tomorrow, but I don't wanna get so excited I start talking about that.

So, in Acts 2, Peter's preaching, he says, men and brethren, let me talk to you about the patriarch David.

He's both dead and buried and his tomb is with us today.

Therefore, being a prophet, foreseeing this, he spoke concerning the resurrection of Christ." So David, David is buried and his tomb is, well, where they think he's buried or close to it, is right there in Jerusalem.

And he's, but he was a prophet, which means everything he wrote about himself was a prophecy about the seed of David or the lineage of David, which is Jesus.

And when Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the watery grave as an example, and God the Father said, this is my David, in whom I'm well pleased.

So these Psalms, you gave me gall for my food, thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink, right?

Vinegar was the alcohol of the Roman soldiers for the poor soldiers.

So they tried to numb the pain with that, he refused it.

And then Psalm 69 is quoted 7 times in fulfillment of Jesus' life.

Oh God, you know my foolishness, my sins are not hidden from you.

This does not mean Jesus was foolish, but you are, and He took the penalty for what you did on him.

I don't know about you, but I've been foolish enough that that's very good news.

But that's not the Psalm I want to look at you with.

I want to look at Psalm 22 with you tonight.

Now, you know, counseling, secular psychology, behaviorism, behavioral modification therapy, all these tired theories that I studied for many years have nothing, nothing in comparison with the psychology of the Bible.

They are, as I've studied more and counseled for the last 15 years, they are vacuous, they They are vacuous tours into oblivious sentimental hopelessness masquerading as hopefulness.

But when you look at the Bible, it is the ultimate psychologist.

And so I wanna show you that tonight, just from 1 Psalm, Psalm 22.

And if you wanted to look up all the Psalms, some of the Psalms, some of the New Testament texts that Psalm 22 alludes to, it's almost as if, you know, it's 1 of the vertebral structures, a backbone of some of the ways that Christ dealt with things.

He hearkened back to this Psalm, and so can we.

Now there's A sections, I get this from Pastor Gibbs and his introduction, but I'll have my own thoughts in a minute.

The A sections express the feelings of Jesus on the cross.

You might say, express the feelings and intrusive thoughts that Jesus dealt with on the cross.

Have you ever known anybody that had intrusive thoughts?
