Teach a Man to Fish, Part 3

Christ should be seen in every passage and every chapter.

And we want this session now to pick up where we left off yesterday, and I want to invite Emmanuel to pick up the strain of thought he shared with us.

Now, yesterday, 1 of the last points we had been discussing was biblical typology.

This is a very interesting part of the Bible, And yesterday we started with the example of the children of Israel.

Paul in 1 Corinthians talks about all of the events which took place for the children of Israel were an example or in the Greek typos, which is where we get our English word type, they prefigured or foreshadowed the things which God's people would go through again at the end of time.

And so as we look at some of these types, this is a very, very rich field of study in the Bible.

Yesterday, I shared with you that the sanctuary, many of or I should say all of the elements of the sanctuary in some way prefigured or foreshadowed the work of Christ or something in the plan of salvation.

We talked about the cleansing of the leper yesterday.

Today I want to give you a practical tip on how to discover types.

And if you look at this statement carefully, this is an author that...whose book I have immensely enjoyed.

At the end of our seminar tomorrow, we'll have a bibliography available as well.

This is from the book, The Study of the Types by Ada R.

She says, we cannot state with certainty that anything is a type unless we have some warrant for doing so.

If we can turn to no New Testament passage for our authority or if there be no expression or analogy which indicates the anti-type, It is safer and more correct to call it an illustration.

So basically the idea is this, a type is something which is made reference to in the New Testament, which is borrowed from something in the Old Testament that foreshadows the work of Christ or some event or some figure that is mentioned in the New.

And today I want to give you an example of how we can stumble or find these types of things.

And the example that I want to ask you to look with me at is in the book of John chapter 4.

Now yesterday we looked at Leviticus 14, but I want to ask you to turn with me to, I'm sorry, Romans chapter 3.

And if you have a Bible with a marginal reading, I'm going to ask, I'm going to call upon a volunteer to read for us what it says in the margin.

Romans chapter 3 verse 25, here's what Paul says.

He says, whom God hath set forth to be a… what's that next word?

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation.

And if you want to know who this is talking about, the last person mentioned in verse 24 is who?

So Paul is saying in verse 25, whom God, speaking of Jesus, has set forth to be a propitiation.

So the Bible is basically saying that Jesus is this thing called a propitiation.

Now that's kind of a big word, but if you have a Bible with a marginal reading, can someone please tell me, in your marginal reading, there should be a little notation by the word propitiation.

And what does it say in your Bible in the marginal reading for the word propitiation?

So, in other words, what the Bible is telling us is this, that Jesus is our mercy seat.

So right there, just by saying that, we have a New Testament author that is giving to us a citation of something from the Old Testament indicating that that figure in the Old Testament symbolizes or references something or someone as a type and in this case of course Jesus.

What piece of furniture was the mercy seat a part of?

Thanks to the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark, even in my secular audiences, everybody knows what the Ark of the covenant is, okay?

So the Ark of the Covenant, as you know, basically was comprised of 3 distinct sections.

The top of the mercy seat, I'm sorry, the top of the Ark of the Covenant was that part which had these 2 angels which had their wings veiled, Isn't that right?

And now the Bible doesn't mention this, but Jewish legend says that between these 2 cherubim, these 2 angelic figures, these 2 cherubims, is where the presence of God, also called the Shekinah glory, dwelt.

And make no mistake, this was a real thing in ancient Israel.

They did not, they did not view this as merely some curiosity.

They had a godly fear of that particular part.

Hebrews tells us that our God is a consuming what?

So in other words, as we see from the example of Uzzah, the ark was not a toy to be played with.

If you were to find yourself in the presence of the ark of the covenant with sin in your life.

Now, if we go to the bottom of the ark, there was a main cabinet, and among other items in there, there was something which God wrote with his own finger.

So there in the bottom of the Ark was the 10 Commandments, and those 10 Commandments, the purpose of the law, as according to Paul in Romans 7, the purpose of the law is to give us a knowledge of sin.

These 2 things together are very forbidding.

Because the purpose of the law is to point out sin.

And the presence of God as manifested on the top of the ark is to consume sin.

Which means if that's all that there was, there would be no hope for the sinner.

Because coming before God, the law would point out his sin and God's presence would consume him.

But praise God, there was something right in between.

And that's why Paul tells us that the mercy seat was a symbol of Jesus.

And this is how we can find this type of typology.

I want to ask you to turn with me to John chapter 4, and I want to ask you to look with me at a well-known story.

Perhaps you've never considered it in this light before, but in light of our subject of typology today, I do want to open this to, bring this to your attention.

John chapter 4, and I want to ask you to come with me to verse 6.

The Bible says, now Jacob's well was there.

Jesus, therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well, and it was about the sixth hour.

And the Bible says that when he comes, he stops at where?

Now, that in itself would not be enough to say, oh, there's something here that this involves, this requires further investigation.

But now we come down a little bit further in the story of Jesus and his interaction with the woman at the well.

And if you come with me to verse 12, please notice what it says.
