08 The Nuts and Bolts of a Great Cooking Class! Part 02

So we got some new faces and some people had to go, but that's okay.

If you weren't here at the last hour, I'm Stephanie Howard.

I am, I've been in health ministries, working in health ministries now for probably 30 years.

And I also co-wrote 2 cookbooks, the something better cookbook and also the kidlicious cookbook.

Sarah's here, she co-wrote the something better with me and we're working on a second 1 for called something better together.

Pray for us, because we are very slowly working on it.

If you want that book to come out, pray harder.

I promised you at the end of the last class that we were going to talk about a way to register your people for your classes.

Stacy talked about it briefly when she talked yesterday, but I find this to be the best, most exciting phenomenon that ever happened to us.

Almost as good as sliced bread, or maybe even better.

Has anybody in this room heard of 1 Accord?

So, let me tell you a little bit about, Ron, did you just want to tell them about 1 Accord?

I don't have a microphone for you, though.

This is the co-founder of 1 Accord, and he's also my brother-in-law.

And I love this software because it helps keep track of people, but what I love most for health ministry leaders is I've always struggled with getting people to register for my events.

How do I, you know, is a Google form, those never look good, What do I do?

And then once they are in the Google form, how do I keep track of them to make sure that I visit them and call them and all the things that we talked about Betty doing?

So let's let Ron tell us a little bit about 1 Accord first and then we'll show you how to make your own event.

But first of all, it's free to every church member in Michigan.

No, for those of you who have, or maybe have not heard about 1 Accord, the Michigan Conference has contracted with us to actually purchase a license for every church in Michigan.

So 185 congregations, I believe, now have access to the 1 Accord church software, church management software.

And so OneAccord is actually a lot of different things.

I'll just very briefly touch on a few of those before I tell you about the 1 that's most applicable to this conversation.

But in a general sense, it's a interest management tool.

A CRM, it's a Customer Relationship Manager.

It's what the largest large corporations use in the world to manage their sales pipelines and their relationships with people that they're trying to communicate with in the communities.

And so we developed what we call an IRM because guess what churches don't have customers.

But we do have interests So we have an interest relationship manager.

We are also, just as a little FYI, we are also in contract with the Pennsylvania Conference.

We're handling all of their evangelism this year.

We are in contract with the Georgia Cumberland Conference.

Georgia Cumberland is using our Bible study ministry to manage their entire Bible study ministry for their 242 churches.

We are the official technology provider for It Is Written.

It Is Written is now using our software for all of their evangelism and the things that they're doing.

We are actually helping them to host an event this year in Baltimore this fall called Hope for Revelation Today, Hope for Humanity.

It's gonna be co-spoken by John Bradshaw and Alex Bryant, the North American Division President.

And we're working with the Chesapeake and Allegheny East Conferences there.

We are owned by a company, our parent company is a company called WebPoint Solutions.

We're the developer for the White Estate.

They're developing the new EGW Writings 3 mobile app.

We just released all of the new children's Sabbath school curriculum websites, Alive in Jesus, for the general conference.

And so we do a lot of work with the church, so we create products only for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

And 1 Accord is now our product that we felt like we wanted to give away for local churches to be able to manage their interest lists and their church activities through technology and software.

As Stephanie mentioned, a few of the things that we do offer within the software, and I'm just gonna briefly highlight these things, but it comes with a local church website.

So if you feel like your local church website is not up to par, then we offer a local church website that comes with it.

We have a mobile app called 1 Accord Outreach that has mapping and ways for you to add interest and manage interest right from the mobile app.

Every single member in your church can have the mobile app, effectively creating a way to engage our entire membership.

It's not just the pastor who does ministry, right?

It's our job as church members to do this ministry and so we've got that.

We have a full comprehensive evangelism management tool so you can manage evangelism events including attendance tracking.

We have a evangelism registration website so for Keys to Revelation we're doing that with the Michigan Conference.

That's the site that we use, and we register people, pre-register people to come to those events.

When they come in, they will bring to us, because we send them a digital ticket that they can bring in.

We have a mobile app scanner called 1 Accord Scanner that when they bring in their digital ticket, we just scan them and it marks them in attendance.

And so it's a comprehensive event management tool.

We even offer all the handbills, the social media advertising, any other type of direct mail, banners, and all the resources needed to advertise their events.

And so that's something that we're working with the Michigan Conference on as well.

1 of the things that we just released, oh, let me just, before I mention that, we also have a Bible school.

Has anybody here heard of Bible Study Offer?

Bible Study Offer is now on the 1 Accord platform.

I actually just came from a presentation where we were talking all about Bible study offer, but if you don't know, if you're not using Bible study offer in your local church, I highly encourage you to bring it up at your next board meeting or to your pastor or whatever, personal ministries leader.

Now, just last week, I think Stephanie has actually played with it more than me.

We released a, because 1 of the things that we felt like was very important, and this is where this starts to apply here, is we had these big evangelism event management tools, right?

But we started thinking, what happens when you hold a vacation Bible school?

What happens when you hold a healthy cooking class?

What happens when you have another type of an event that's not evangelism?

All the effort across the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been put into these evangelistic meetings and we track these evangelistic meetings and there's just never been a real good tool to track any type of an event.

So now you have the ability right from the system and I think Stephanie's going to start showing you that in just a moment where you can if you again if you are in a Michigan church, I don't know, is there anybody in here from not in Michigan?

07 The Nuts and Bolts of a Great Cooking Class, Part 01

You're about to enjoy a presentation recorded at the 2025 Michigan Conference Camping, held at Cedar Lake, Michigan.

I am Stephanie and I am a cookbook author.

I've been doing health ministries for about 30 years, believe it or not, and I am going to share with you about cooking schools, and I'm very excited because this is my favorite form of health ministries, and of all of the cooking school forms that we talked about with Stacey, when Stacey was talking, she talked about all the different types of cooking ministries and stuff.

My very, very favorite is the 1 that she didn't understand, it's the supper club.

And I think she didn't understand it because I don't, she was raised Adventist, but I wasn't.

In the worldly world, there are things called supper clubs and people get together and they share a meal or a common topic and they do a supper club.

So I like a supper club because it's the number 1 best way to build a consistent relationship with someone.

If you're doing a diabetes recovery, that's great, but if you don't follow it up with something like a monthly thing, then you're going to lose contact with the people.

You're not going to build a relationship.

If you do a week-long cooking school, it's going to be great to have people come in and you're going to meet them and you're going to like them, but you're not going to be able to consistently keep that relationship because you're not meeting on the monthly basis.

So I love and so this conversation we're going to talk about today is going to talk lean greatly toward those monthly meetings.

Now if you can't do a monthly meeting at your church, if you've got a super small church and it's just too much, that's okay.

Let's do just, we're just going to be consistent, so we'll do every other month.

Or we'll do once a quarter, but just make sure you're very consistent and once you get really good at that, then your people will know when it is, they'll know when to invite their friends, and all that kind of stuff.

So when I think about the nuts and bolts of a cooking school, that kind of makes me think of all of the nitty gritty parts of a cooking school that make it run smoothly and make it run well.

And we're going to talk about all of that.

We're going to talk about the charging for money or not charging for money.

We're going to talk about how to pick your helpers and how to really get them to actually help.

And we're going to talk about all the stuff.

But before we do that, I wanted to talk a little bit about why we do this, and here's why.

I started attending a church recently that has a very strong health emphasis.

They're trying to build a clinic there, there's doctors, and there's all kinds of things going on, and they're bringing people into the church through the clinic and all that, so they're doing a great ministry.

However, I am talking to other church members in that same church, and they're saying things to me, because I just accepted the role as health ministries leader, so pray for me.

But, and so they're, you know, talking to me about it, and they're like, you know, I have never understood why we do health ministries as a church anyway.

And I'm like, they've been doing these health, they've got the clinic, they've got all these things going on here for the last 2 or 3 years, and the church members don't even know why we're doing health ministries, I feel like we need to kind of start with why.

So this is your turn to tell me why we do health ministries.

Well it's the writer of the gospel, we can't use cliches.

I mean, I think it's especially true for her, when she said to bring people in, but many of us within the church were not certain that that is, and we didn't understand the impact of what we eat, or even exercise, or eat whatever is good for our body.

Right, so we don't understand health, that's a good thing, yes.

So we want to see people in our communities healthy.

We want to see people heal and to live better.

No, we want them to have a clear mind to receive the doctor's advice.

We want to make friends and influence people for the kingdom.

Most people either have a health issue themselves or a loved 1 that does.

It's a way to bring people into our church that might otherwise not have been.

And you know, through the health message, it's a way to opening, you know, a new place.

I feel like every church should be a center of influence.

Like a health center, where people know they can come and learn things about improving their health.

And to be, like you said, open on a consistent basis.

It scratches where it itches, that's like, Yes, it does scratch.

We need to have entry into the mind so that we can plant seeds.

It clears their brain, so we know how to think better.

And then we can let the Holy Spirit know that.

Yep, those are the 2 of the 3 reasons Sister White gives.

There's 1 more reason that Sister White gives that most people don't think about, but it applies to all of us who have been in the church forever.

People can't be sanctified without changing their health habits to clear their minds, to make them able to be ready for translation.

So can we kind of agree that the end goal is an active church member?

I mean, Obviously, making the community aware and healthy and stuff is a goal, but the end goal, if we were to be real honest, our end goal is for them to be baptized church members.

We're not here just to feed the community.

We're not here to, you know, as Pastor, I think it was Pastor Seriglia, maybe Pastor O'Phil said, you're going to have a bunch of happy, well-adjusted people in the lake of fire if you don't do something beyond this right so we want to definitely do that So when I was a kid I liked mazes and I would always start at the end of the maze to get to the beginning because I always found it easier.

Does anybody here read the end of the book first?

Well, people in marketing and stuff these days call it reverse engineering.

You start at the end and work your way back.

So if our goal is a happy, active church member, what has to happen, what are the steps that have to happen to get them there?

So how do you get a happy active church member?

So 1 of our goals is to get these people into Bible studies, right?

And then from the Bible studies, they probably had to change lifestyle habits.

And beyond that, we had to build the relationships with them to make friends with them.

And so when they come into our events, whatever they are, we kind of just have to keep in mind what our end goal is without saying it out loud.

Like we're not going to walk in and say, hey, We might actually do this, but it's okay.

There is, I don't know when to tell the story because it's such the best story, but I'm gonna tell it now and we'll talk about it later too.

09 Techniques for Engaging Cooking Demos that Inspire! Part 01

Let's have a prayer, and then I wanted to clear up a few things after I talked to people yesterday maybe I was not clear on.

So, Father in heaven, thank you for the opportunity to be here at Kent meeting.

Thank you for the opportunity to learn how to serve you better and to win souls into your kingdom.

Okay, so yesterday I wanted to clarify, I talked about charging for a supper club or a Christmas school and some people were here and they were suggesting that they they're not trying you now they haven't had any trouble they do the things I had issues with I said don't charge them don't you have to change anything just because I said so I mean every every church is different every situation is different so don't feel like you know we're putting a straightjacket on you and say you have to do it this way.

Because different things work for different groups of people.

We have to know our audience and work with them the way we do it.

Also, I talked to another lady, I don't see her here today.

She was talking about how her church was so small and there were like 4 people that were trying to get together this health ministry and they do these events and they're in kind of a rural area so it's kind of hard to get people to come out.

But she started a little health club with her little 4 friends in the church who were trying to be healthy.

And I said, why don't you just do that with people, just invite people to that?

And you don't have to do food demos, you don't have to do a big dinner, you could do something completely different.

Just, the great thing about ministry is we could do what feels right for us.

Lord will lead us in the right direction.

So she's, I think, going to get together with her people.

They get together once a week, but they might do it once a month where they get together with people in the community.

They'll have a health goal for the month and those types of things.

My job was to talk about cooking school, so everything I talk about is cooking.

But if you don't want to cook, you don't have to.

Another thing I've done as far as cooking things go, and I didn't talk about yesterday, was in-home cooking classes.

If you have a small group of people who want to learn to be healthy, and maybe your church isn't on board, or maybe the church doesn't have a good place to do it, just have them over the house.

I think I got 10 people into my tiny little kitchen 1 time, and you know we just talked over the island and we cooked things and just kind of a hands-on, let's do it, right?

So if so, do what works best for you and your situation.

Just doing a full-blown, which is what we've mostly been talking about, health ministries thing is not, you know, required, right?

And the only way we're gonna baptize them is to build relationships with them and share Jesus with them.

I think we always need to keep it, we kind of forget, we want to build, as health ministries, we always want to build relationships and we do want them to become part of the church but we kind of miss that link.

And tomorrow they're going to be talking a lot about that link between your health ministry and your Bible study ministry and how to get those people together.

So today's class is on how to do a cooking demonstration.

And We're supposed to have a couple of tables, and I think they're going to bring us them, so that we can do some practice demonstrations up here.

I brought some things to show you how I set up, but while we're doing that, I'll just talk until the stuff comes.

We talked a little bit yesterday about do we serve only vegan food or do we serve, you know, what do we serve at our separate...

We talked about serving the optimal diet at our separate clubs and letting people choose to add dairy if they want to or meat if they want to or whatever they want to add at their own home.

But we want to show them that the optimal diet can taste great, which means we have to make it taste great.

So tip of the day, test all of your recipes.

Even if it's a recipe like from my cookbook and you know it's going to be really good and you haven't made it yet, try it because something could be wrong.

You just need to know what you're doing when you're doing things.

Also, when you're picking recipes, you don't want to pick something that's so easy that they already know how to do it.

I'm trying to think of something that's like, you know, just like a salad.

Well, some salads, you have to, some salads, yes, but sometimes you can talk about how to make a salad taste better, because people don't serve good salads.

I've got some very strong opinions about it.

We talked about making them kind of go along with what you're talking about.

So if you're talking about weight loss or diabetes or something like that, you're gonna talk about fiber, right?

And if you're talking about, let's say you're talking about hydration and water, you might not serve all water, But you might serve something like a cool cucumber drink that helps hydrate better, or you might serve some watermelon-type dessert, something very watery, so you can just highlight that as part of your, you know, Keep it all kind of connected.

And if you're demoing just 1 or 2 of the recipes, so again, we talked about you don't have to demo at all.

But if you are demoing recipes and you're not doing the entire menu, try to pick the most interesting recipes, like the ones that have an interesting ingredient like nutritional yeast flakes or soy curls or something like, what is that?

Or even things that people aren't gonna have heard of before and then you also need to know your audience.

When you know your audience, you've got to demo differently.

So if you're demoing people to people who don't know how to cook at all, you're going to have to show them how to chop an onion, right?

You're going to have to show them how to grease a pan or – not that we grease pans, you know what I mean.

You're going to, people don't know how to cook.

I mean, there's a lot of people in this world who have never cooked anything in their lives.

They've lived on TV dinners and McDonald's.

And they're going to come to your cooking school saying, I need to get healthy.

And you're going to have to help them learn to cook.

So know who you're, once you get to know your audience and who people are coming, you'll know how much to demo and how much not.

So you may be demoing to a bunch of older ladies who cook all the time and they know how to do all that stuff And then you can just be real simple with it.
