Jesus Methods in the 21st Century, Part 7

I want to begin by just saying, in 2002, I went to Claremont.

And 1 of the passions on my heart was setting up preventative methods for pastors, ministry caregivers, to refrain from being burned out.

And so I did a D-Min and my emphasis was on prevention of pastor burnout and renewal if you have been burned out.

And I think that burnout is really with us to stay in the 21st century.

It is because of the pace of the lifestyle of the 21st century.

And I just want you all to know this morning that this truly will be a journey because I am not here as a teacher.

I'm gonna share some of my personal journey with health and with holistic living.

And let's let this be a place where we feel free to share.

I also want to remind you if we want to talk deeper and personally, as pastors, We will meet this afternoon from 2 to 5 if you would like to, and just have a conversation about A, how can we motivate other pastors to be interested and concerned about health ministry personally and with their churches?

And then B, how can you and I become better stewards of our personal bodies, our personal minds, personal time, How can we be better in the whole dispensation of being the best steward with what we have been given by our Lord and through his prophet, Ellen White?

For those of you who want to spend time, you know, away from your office, that's a two-day program.

So we're going to be right at this door, right from here.

We already began with prayer and I just want to begin by asking you Why you are interested in health as a pastor or a pastor supporter.

Some of you all flew here, some of you are in this track because you're very interested in supporting or motivating your own pastors.

Why would you, what is passionate for you in this area that you can be a part of this journey with me this morning.

Maybe that's a very plain question to ask, but I wanna get some feedback from you as we start here.

Pastor Kuh, we're glad that you're here and we hope you can take that fire back to your church.

As I stated, I've been interested in health.

My parents were Adventists, But we really didn't talk much about vegetarianism in our home.

And at 13, I didn't, I probably became a vegetarian more because I was interested in being the best athlete more than anything.

And unbeknownst to me at that time in my life, God was calling me to ministry.

That summer at 13, I worked in my first evangelistic meeting in hot Dublin, Georgia, David, welcome.

And it was there that I began this journey in ministry.

But health, let me tell you, It has always been a part of the consciousness of my mind.

And today, you know, you can have a lot of money, but if you don't have health and quality of life, it doesn't mean anything.

And you know, I came in last night about 12.30, Katya, And I said, man, I'm excited about coming to the Health Summit.

And when I got to my room, I said Marriott didn't get the memo.

Do you know when you go to most hotels, they have water that you pay for in the rooms.

They didn't know they could have made a lot of money this week by putting charged water in the rooms because we're interested in help.

They didn't get the memo and so we have to tell them when we leave, gotcha.

But this morning, I want to journey with you by looking at the malady, the issues for pastors that cause us to go to the lane called imbalance.

And then simply I want to look at the prescriptive or suggestive remedy.

So I want to look at some problems and then let's talk together about some possible remedies that we can have in our journey of being pastors.

At the NAD, we have 5 values, and they are faith, family, finance, fitness, and fellowship.

And so pastors, These are values that we really are pushing.

This is also a part of our strategic focus that through these 5 Fs, we can make a difference in your lives and in ours.

I've just been out of the pastorate for the last 3 and a half years, ministerial director in Northern Cal and now at the division, but I pastored for over 23 years.

I'll give you a quick commercial to be a voice for you, to be an advocate for pastors, because as quiet as it's kept, even at the policy level, policy affects our lives and it can even affect our health.

We'll get to that in a little bit and talk about that.

But so I want to talk about fitness, not just physical fitness, although that is very important.

I want to talk about mental fitness and emotional fitness.

And we want to look at this whole thing, emotional intelligence and what does that mean.

And we're going to look at Christ, our Lord, and see how he gives us the greatest example of being balanced individuals.

In 2001, Pulpit and Pew Research did a project that revealed strikingly high rates of obesity in a nationwide survey of parish pastors.

And many times we are no different than society, yea, and our congregation.

Gwen Hallis, She did a study that describes significant levels of stress, depression, and lifestyle-related physical ailments.

And she says pastors face greater demands today than their predecessors did.

Why is it all consuming for those who are pastoring?

Yes, you're expected to do a lot of things.

And many times the role issues, the issues of role, the expectations clash with my personal ideologies about my role versus a congregational member's view of what my role should be, my wife's role, my children's role, and sometimes these roles clash and can cause undue stress because of maybe unrealistic expectations.

In addition to that, 1 of the things that we must understand is our vocation is 1 of very few where we are paid to do what we should be.

We are paid to be spiritual leaders and yet we are to be spiritual people because that's what God has asked us to be.

And so when you are not feeling connected to the Lord, and yet you must preach or you must visit or you must pray, you have a convergence of some things going on that we don't talk about in ministry.

We are paid to be something that we should be.

I think in terms of, I will just introduce myself.

Dossens from the Loma Linda University and School of Public Health.

And then we deal with preventive care mostly and prevention.

And 1 thing that we have to be careful is, and I will finish with this, walk the talk.

If we want to influence kids, we have to walk the talk.

Cannot preach to kids and stay sitting there and say, hey, go outside and play.

And we are going to start with some epidemics here, some statistics.

And then we will go to several different, I would say, areas, but walk the talk is gonna be on each 1 of them.

If we talk about school, if you talk about community, ooh.

I thought it was something, I thought it was you.

Yeah, it's okay, it's just right there, perfect.

We should start at home, then school, then church, then community, wherever.

But we have to have these models because children are influenced by us.

Eduardo Santos, Loma Linda University School of Public Health, and I will start this now that we have the main group here.

I will start with, we will have some case studies here, and I need your input in some of them.

And my nickname in Brazil was Gordinho, or Gordito in Spanish, or a little chubby in English.

And then I have a friend that came from Brazil.

He is here now, and he visit me, and he said, hey, Gordo, how are you?

I say, my goodness, it's a long time since someone called me.

You know, we have some friends there from Brazil.

I'm still a little shabby, but I was very, very, very big.

I was the center of attraction because I was in a party and everybody will call, ah, you eat a lot, huh?

And I feel, I feel very important with that.

And sometimes kids need this, something for them to make, to be special.

Until I figured out that I was really fat and fit, could not run, could not do anything, and that was not good.

When I was about 16 or 17, I came across the Adventist health books.

Ministry of Healing, Counselors on Health, Counselors on Diet and Foods, Temperance.

Simply reading those books changed my life.

I became vegetarian, lacto-ovo vegetarian, 3 meals a day only, daily exercise, lots of fruits and vegetables, nuts, Brazil nuts, The best, okay?

So we follow a little bit on the health and temperance.

So what are the lessons that we got from that?

First, we should dispose our children to our health inheritance.

When the message came to Brazil, we only have this message, don't eat pork meat, don't eat unclean fish, do not smoke and drink.

I remember 1 of the first pastors in Brazil that was a Brazilian pastor was cousin of my grandfather, José Amador dos Reis.

He was a very good missionary, but he didn't, he was not taking care of his health.

He would, I mean, we are from the south, we have some friends from the south also, and we eat, we used to eat a lot of meat, meat in the, is the gaucho, South American cowboys, the gauchos, meat is in the breakfast, lunch and dinner, Dry meat or beef jerk, whatever we call.

And was the first pastor, ordained pastor in Brazil.

He could be alive, not until today, but he could live a little longer if he took care of his health.

Maybe he didn't know or Maybe the message went there a little crooked.

I mean, let's not talk about meat here because nobody will accept the message.

It's like you go to Texas and they say, well, you have to be vegetarian.

They look at you, well, if I am vegetarian, I'm not Texan anymore.

Or I'm not Caribbean anymore, or I'm not Portuguese anymore, or I'm not whatever, you are Martinique anymore.

Well, but the lesson here is that I like to make is I think we should have Ellen White books in our school curriculum.

I met a public school teacher 2 weeks ago and she was saying that she's reading Ellen White, she's Adventist and she works in a public school and she brings Ellen White books there and use as a literature to teach English.

And then when they go to the contents, so why we should not eat meat?

I mean, so constructing the words or the phrases and the paragraphs, She was underlining the message.

So this is something that we could present.

17% of children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 are obese in this country.

1 of 7 low-income preschool age is already obese.

Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years in this country.

And it came from 7% in 1980 to 20% in 2008 among the 6 to 11 years old.

And among the 12 to 19 years old, it went from 5% to 18%.

So this is the main argument that this business here is not hereditary.

Even though some physicians are saying, well, it's hereditary.

Regitari has a trait and are those, I'm not sure if you know, in the past when you were young, I mean we have 1 or 2 that were shabby.

So most of this was, on that time, was hereditary.

Even though, I remember, I have a family close to my house in Porto Alegre, South of Brazil.

Something is, The genes are passing to the dog, so kind of impossible.

Father, we just thank you once again for the opportunity to be here this morning and please help us, help everyone here.

I don't know the needs that they have in their hearts, but bring your spirit to comfort and to answer the requests that people have and help us to take this information and really honor your name as we bring this to our churches, our schools, wherever we are, so others can be engaged and start to experience more of this abundant life you have for us.

All right, so I just want to go over some of the, as you recall, we went through this already, some of the goals that we have with Admonishing Steps for Life initiative.

And as I said earlier, 1 has to do with physical activity, miles, getting people to move, because that's a huge part of the obesity epidemic, as you saw.

And the other 1 has to do with increasing the access to fruits.

Yesterday, we talked about gardens and, you know, mentioned a little bit about summer feeding sites, I will go online today with you so you can see the resources that are on the website.

But I'd like to focus a little bit on the miles and the physical activity piece and what we are about.

I wrote 1000000 here because this was last year's goal.

I don't know if you heard about Atmospheric Steps for Life, you knew that we had that goal of 1000000 miles, right?

And if you're here Sabbath, you saw that actually we went beyond 2000000.

To tell you the truth, it's wonderful, but I think we were much beyond 2000000.

Problem is people did not report their miles.

How many of you exercise on a regular basis?

How many of you, of those who exercise, reported your miles for 2011?

Which means, if we were really to report what we do, I think we would get 10 million miles, really, or more.

Imagine if we could come to the country, to the White House, and tell the Surgeon General, by the way, we did 3 times the country's goal.

It's just that we need to capture that in the reports.

And that's why I know I'm like a broken record.

But it's because it's much greater than just you wanted to go online and report.

The impact that this can have for this movement, how we can change the health of the communities, starting in our own churches, can be huge if we are able to report what we are doing.

Over a million miles of the 2000000 we got came from chaplains who are in the armed forces and they are active, as you know, they are required to maintain their physical activity and they do, at least 3 times a week, they have to be active and do an hour of physical activity.

And so The other 1000000 came from people from churches and schools who reported.

But I'm hoping that this year, and I know this year, I think we could even say 3000000 but I said let's just do that.

Let's see if we can get churches to do 2000000.

And then if the chaplains do another million, that would be 3000000.

But, and that would be meeting the country's goal.

So this year we're doing 2000000 miles and then we're trying to get our students to get the awards.

And I'll talk about awards as well later on.

This lady, she is bought this wonderful cream.

And you know, on TV, you can buy all kinds of creams and things that will make you younger and good.

So she's trying to summertime, be ready to put her swimming suit.

And so she buys this because she wants to get rid of the cellulite, right?

So apply Miracle Cellulite Cream to problem areas and then run 10 miles, right?

The truth is that there is No easy solution or no quick fix to cellulite or to weight or to, you know, looking good.

People and I know I come from Brazil too and 1 of the common things there and I know it's here too but there is big is plastic surgery.

Young people doing plastic surgery to look good.

I have a lot of people that I know there are in their 20s, 30s, and then doing plastic surgery to get rid of the extra fat, in their 40s, getting rid of this or that.

And many of them do more than once, sometimes twice, because their lifestyle continues on, and they need to go and have it again.

In 2009, the Harvard Medical School of Lifestyle Medicine, Institute of Lifestyle Medicine, as well as the American College of Preventive Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine all got together.

And they announced the publication of this book that's called Exercise is Medicine.

And it's a clinician's guide to exercise prescription.

We don't have any clinicians here, right, that practice in the US?

You practice in your, are you a nurse, a physician?

Exercise is medical, a clinician's guide to exercise prescription?

But this actually came from a movement in Europe, actually, where people there, clinicians there, were talking about this need to prescribe exercise for their patients.

And so it started there even before it got here.

But then after that, you know, since that movement was going on, Harvard Medical School and, you know, the 3 organizations decided to publish that.

There was some press about it, And I mean, I'm a nurse practitioner.

I heard about it through our church, really, not really through conferences and going through conferences.

And because we were doing in-step and I was, you know, doing some research.

And actually, this book that is going around, and Dr.

Hall, he is always on top of what's happening, the latest, and he's the 1 who told us about this.

So I started prescribing exercise for my patients.

And so, okay, you're gonna do 30 minutes of physical activity once a day, 5 days a week, you know, for whatever, 2 months.

Not every physician knows about it and is doing it or every health professional, but there has been a huge change and recommendations that we should do that.

If you go to this site, exercisesmedicine.org, you can read more about that and learn about this.

This is something science is telling us, but we know more.

Over 100 years, we have been aware that this is very important for not only our physical health, but our spiritual health.

I like this quote from the book Education.

It says, and you can read with me, Since the mind and the soul find expression through the body both mental and spiritual vigor are in great degree dependent upon physical strength and activity.

Is it saying that our spiritual vigor is dependent upon our exercise?

It's pretty much giving that hint, isn't it?

It's saying that our mental, it's not talking about physical only, it's saying mental and spiritual vigor are in great degree dependent upon physical strength and activity.

So whatever promotes physical health promotes the development of a strong mind and well-balanced character.

So when you're exercising or becoming physically strong, it's saying that that promotes the development of a strong character, of a strong mind, and brings spiritual vigor.

Many times we run and I know you probably run into this.

We shouldn't be talking about exercise during worship time, you know, on Sabbath morning.

We usually do it between Sabbath school and service, you know, that time.

But some people think that that's not appropriate.

Okay once again good morning everyone you guys look like you are so happy to be here and obviously you are because all of us have come most of us have come a long way so I'm just glad to be here this morning to just share a few things that we are doing in Allegheny East and I'm sure everyone is saying it we're just so happy to have the direction of Katya and it just I'm going to show you how God works because this message that we have the health message is just bar none and he wants it out there.

So I thought I would start with, as you can see, I have on a sweatsuit and on the back it says Allegheny East on the move.

So I will explain how all of that happened, and hopefully it'll give you some ideas for your churches or your conferences when you go back home.

When I started in this position, which has been about 7 years, I asked if we could have a coordinator in each area.

It extends from Virginia, Washington, DC, and the Maryland area, which would also include Baltimore, and then parts of Delaware, parts of southern Jersey, Philadelphia, parts of Pennsylvania, other parts of Pennsylvania, and then we go up to North Jersey, almost to New York.

So it's a large conference and it's extended so there was no way that I could do it alone.

So anyway the conference allowed me to get 6 coordinators and So that's how we do a lot of our brainstorming.

So I prayed about who should be on this team.
