04 The Sanctuary Power of the Tabernacle

Our scripture reading again is from 1 Peter chapter 2 and verse 9.

1 Peter chapter 2 and verse 9, the Bible says, But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, that you should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into this marvelous light.

That you should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into this marvelous light.

A message this Sabbath is entitled the power of the tabernacle, The Power of the Tabernacle.

Father God, we thank you for this opportunity to study your word.

Now Lord, more than ever, I ask that you make me just a nail upon the wall, a rusty sorry nail, Lord, but upon that nail, Lord, I ask that you hang a portrait of Jesus Christ.

Instead, Father, Let us hear a word from the throne room of grace.

This is our prayer in Jesus's precious and holy name.

So just a little recap, since it's been a few weeks, we've been looking at the sanctuary.

And this is a unique message in many ways to the Adventist Church, although many, many churches study the sanctuary.

And just to remind you, these are the white panels all the way around, the linen, about 7 and a half feet tall.

You couldn't just look into the sanctuary.

That's going to be relevant as we go further on.

And as you went in, the first piece of furniture, the largest piece of furniture in the entire sanctuary complex is the brazen altar made of bronze.

This is where the daily sacrifices for sin was made.

Beyond that, we talked about the laver, the bronze laver where washing would happen.

And remember we said that the first stop, the brazen altar, also signifies and represented, it was type for the anti-type of the cross itself.

Christ was the lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Interestingly, as you come here and you watch, it represents baptism, which also of course represents Christ's resurrection.

And so you can see that in just the courtyard of the sanctuary, you cover Christ's death, burial, and his resurrection.

The items in the courtyard are all bronze.

Because in the scripture, bronze represents justice.

1 of the interesting facts that we mentioned was that the height of the grate at the bottom of the altar is the same height at the base of the mercy seat in the most holy place justice and mercy on 2 ends of the sanctuary complex and once you begin to understand this the Bible says that in Psalm David says that thy way O Lord is in the sanctuary You begin to understand the plan of salvation And what we talked about is that that first stop represents justification You see when you accept Jesus Christ into your life, when you fully believe in Him, you are justified.

The sacrifice that was made on the cross is a powerful sacrifice, as that blood is applied to your life and whatever you did is not only forgiven, oh the Bible says it even deeper, God remembers your sin no more.

I'm a Christian because God does that for me.

But as you move further in, I'll just show a couple more pictures, we get to the veil.

And we're going to talk more about that today, but just to show you, it is the outer courtyard, the holy place, and then the most holy place.

We'll keep marching through the sanctuary as we go along.

These are just some pictorial representations of the pieces of furniture.

This being the altar, this being the bronze laver where the washing took place and of course there was a veil here and a veil here, this veil is called the door this one's called the gate and of course this remains being called the veil, this is the 1 if you would remember that when Christ died it was torn from the top to the bottom and there's a reason I'm jumping ahead in our sanctuary message stuff here but the reason it was torn from the top to the bottom is because man couldn't do that it was about 4 inches thick very difficult to tear at all but it tore from the top to the bottom, and we'll talk more about that significance, but every time I present the sanctuary I try to not just present it, I want to encapsulate how it plays out in the stories of the Old Testament and maybe even in the New Testament, but for sure I want to go to Numbers chapter 12.

And when I was in Israel, I studied in Israel for 2 months, did college credit there, stayed in a town called Netanya, outside of Tel Aviv, and learned a little Hebrew, and studied Jewish history.

Even took a little special excursion to see all of the Christian sites, places like Bethlehem and Calvary and places like that.

And when I was there, my teacher, who was actually Jewish from Philadelphia, interestingly enough, and really took a liking to me, would sit with me and talk to me about different Jewish traditions.

This is 1 of the stories that he brought up to me while I was in Israel.

It was a story that spoke to Judaism from his perspectives, dislike of racism.

The Bible says in Numbers 12 and verse 1, and Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married.

The story starts off with Moses's siblings upset at his choice of who he married.

Ethiopia in the Bible is often if you translate it from the Greek it means burnt-faced people so she was probably a bit darker than the Jews of the time all of them lived in the in the sun-quenched Middle East so they probably were all pretty tan but she was probably a little darker and obviously was not a Jew in the traditional sense.

Verse 2 and they said, hath the Lord indeed spoken only by Moses?

And look at this part it says and the Lord did what?

As there, that's why you got to be careful what you what you what you what you gossip about God God hears it.

As they're speaking against Moses's wife and basically saying that maybe something's wrong with Moses because he was foolish in who he chose to marry but God heard it and then God there's this comment about Moses that is relevant for our message today as well in verse 3.

Numbers 12 and verse 3 says now the man Moses was very meek above all the men which were upon the face of the earth the Lord spake suddenly unto Moses now before I go on 1 of the things that's incredible is that Moses is highlighted as being especially meek.

This is a man who worked miracles like really no 1 else to that point in Earth's history.

I want you to think about what it would have been like to be Moses and to salter into Pharaoh's palace, take a rod and throw it on the ground and it turns into a serpent.

And when they counteract by throwing down their rods, Pharaoh's magicians, Moses' serpent eats their serpent.

Now some of us would have been doing a dance like we scored a touchdown if that happened.

Moses is able to call flies to come, frogs to come, rivers to turn to blood.

He stands before the mighty Red Sea and the waters stand up on themselves.

The miracles Moses worked, ha, did not make Moses think more of himself than he ought.

1 of the reasons Moses is so well used, such a powerful priest and prophet for God, is because Moses did not let his spiritual success go to his head.

And I want to submit to you part of that is because he spent 40 years in the wilderness tending sheep.

I bet you after that he just stayed humble because he probably never wanted to go have to go back and do that again.

The Bible says the Lord speaks suddenly unto Moses and unto Aaron and unto Mariam and look at what he says here we're talking about the tabernacle today he says come out ye 3 unto the tabernacle of the congregation and they 3 came out it's like you get in trouble in school and they line all the students up and they say Walsh you and so-and-so step forward can you imagine they step forward not knowing what happened and the Lord came down in the pillar of the cloud watch this church and stood in the door of the tabernacle, this is where we're gonna talk about today, the door of the tabernacle, God stood there and called Aaron and Mariam and they both came forth, so now 3 came forth the first time now you know who's in trouble because only 2 are called of the 3 and he said hear now my words god speaking if there be a prophet among you I the lord will make myself known unto him in a vision and will speak unto him in a dream." God said listen if 1 of you is a prophet I'm the 1 that determines who gets spoken to, how they're spoken to.

You don't get to criticize Moses especially not because of who he chose to marry.

I speak to prophets in dreams and visions, but Moses, it goes even deeper.

Verse 8, God says with him, will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches.

And the similitude of the Lord shall he behold.

Wherefore then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

Listen, some of us, you know, growing up there were folk in church who were quick to talk bad about church leadership.

You know, the Bible says that we ought not to touch the Lord's anointed.

There's a certain respect that you get for the office, even if you find it hard to have it for the person.

God says, why weren't you afraid to speak this way against my servant Moses?

The Bible says, and the anger of the Lord was kindled against them and he departed and the cloud departed from off the tabernacle and behold Miriam became leprous white as snow and Aaron looked upon Mariam and behold she was what?

Mariam's skin is lightened because she did not like the darkened skin of Moses' wife.

The Bible says the anger of the Lord was kindled against them.

The cloud lifts and Miriam is struck with a disease right at the door of the tabernacle.

Now, the door of the tabernacle is an interesting part.

And you can see there's a little artist rendition.

We actually bought 1 of these little sanctuary models.

I haven't got time to put together yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

In Exodus 36, it says this about the door.

01 Conceived in Liberty

Let's take a moment before we begin this morning, this short series, to call upon the Lord in prayer.

Father in heaven, we give you honor and praise and glory today as Les read a few moments ago in Psalm 113.

Father conquer in our lives cause us to be more than conquerors and Lord we pray today that you would open our hearts and minds to the message that you have for us.

Things are in disarray and getting worse in our society.

Father, we desperately need to understand what is at the root of these various things that are taking place.

Help us this morning as we study your word to make sense of it all.

For we ask you this in Jesus' name and for his sake, amen.

Friends, to say that we live in perplexing times would be a gross understatement.

The spirit of coercion and oppression has taken deep root here in America, something that many of us never dreamed would happen.

Whether it's the vaccine, masks, transgender activism, you name it.

There are people ready and willing to use force and coercion to propound their ideas and to force others to embrace them.

Friends, there are voices from the past who saw this day coming or at least saw its potential.

This gentleman said, You and I are increasingly told that we have to choose between left or right.

Well, I'd like to suggest that there is no such thing as left or right.

Up to man's age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism.

And regardless of their sincerity or their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

Was it A, Donald Trump, B, Abraham Lincoln, C, Ronald Reagan, Or D, Barack Obama?

He said lots of things, but this wasn't 1 of them.

Well, the correct answer, well, before I go, before I give you the correct answer, I wanna just say, Dawn, you should not be faulted for choosing Lincoln since I borrowed a phrase from the Gettysburg Address for my title this morning.

But the correct answer actually is not Lincoln.

I should know that Gettysburg Address fairly well.

I had to write it out a couple of times in the fourth grade for some minor misbehavior.

In fact, it came to the place where I kept a handwritten copy ready in my social studies book for the next infraction.

Bush's face when I whipped that out and handed it to her after another minor disciplinary measure.

She was also my neighbor, which made the situation a little more difficult.

He said those words when I was a six-month-old infant, but I think they're even more applicable today than they were 57 years ago.

The conflict between liberty and tyranny is indeed age old.

The great majority of people, including Reagan himself, are unaware of its origin and true nature though.

Most People think it is a purely political conflict, but they are mistaken, friends.

Oh yes, it has political implications, but the controversy itself is inherently spiritual.

And in this short series of messages, it is my purpose to explore this question.

What would society look like if God were in direct control of it?

Or maybe we should flip it around and say, what would society look like if God were completely removed from it.

I think we're perhaps getting a partial answer to that as we look around us today.

But today's message will examine what we Adventists call the great controversy and see the principles of this conflict permeate human society.

The second part of the series will contrast 2 nations from scripture, namely ancient Egypt and ancient Israel.

In the story of the Exodus, we discover an example of a situation in which God engaged directly in the development of a nation.

So we will understand to a great extent What principles would guide his society if he were to be in complete control of it?

And of course, as we look forward to the heavenly society, what kind of society will that be?

It will be the society in which God has complete control and oversight.

We can get a window into it by looking at ancient Israel in contrast to Egypt.

And then finally in part 3, we will examine the end time implications of God's plan for society.

We will discover that liberty and oppression will come into a final, direct conflict in the last days of Earth's history, and that God will intervene to deliver his people from the satanically inspired tyranny that will be universal all over the world.

He will, God will intervene to take his people to heaven where they can enjoy the perfect society that he has created, which is conceived in liberty.

So I wanna begin this morning by the scripture reading that Les read a few moments ago.

I wanna begin where our Lord Jesus Christ himself began when he was invited to have the sermon at his home church in Nazareth so long ago.

So turn with me, if you would, to Isaiah 61, and we want to look at verses 1 through 3.

And I want you to read it like you've not read it before.

Read it as though this is the first time you're reading it.

The spirit of the Lord is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor.

He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

How many of you agree that this is a beautiful passage?

I don't wonder why Jesus chose this to begin that sermon.

Jesus began his Nazareth message with these verses that speak of his own anointing as the Messiah, which means anointed 1.

Now here's the question that Jesus' hearers should have asked and that we must not fail to ask.

What was the Messiah, what was Jesus anointed to do?

I believe we have the answer in this very passage, which is why he chose it.

By what person of the Godhead was he anointed?

It's right, he is right there in Isaiah 61.1.

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, he says.

Well, I find it interesting that the Spirit of the Lord is also associated with a concept that's near and dear to our hearts here in America.

Because it says, Paul says in 2 Corinthians 3, verse 17, that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

You’re Looking the Wrong Way

There was 1 moment I cannot measure in time, a world of glare, a man aghast.

I certainly thought quickly enough to achieve the idea, I'm going to be run down and probably killed.

There was a concussion, incredibly and indescribably violent.

It blotted out everything but my thoughts let's pray Father in heaven bless us today as we think for a few moments in this hour and give us your spirit we pray in Christ's name.

I'm sure that's less than you're going to be paying me after the service.

Written by Winston Churchill after he was hit by a car in New York City.

He had come because his stock market investments had gone south, and so he was on a speaking tour.

Not only were his stock market investments going south, but also his political career.

And yet, he was speaking prophetically about a man who had served in World War I right across the trenches from him by the name of Adolf Hitler.

And when Hitler rose to power, suddenly people would realize that Winston Churchill had had the prophetic insight to recognize that Hitler was dangerous.

All the words of Churchill that inspired not only the United Kingdom, but the world to stand up against the aggression of Hitler, It may never have happened because he got hit by a car in New York City because he was looking the wrong way.

The historians obsess over what would have happened if the car had been going just 3 or 4 miles an hour faster than it was.

It broke his nose, it broke his most of his ribs, it was a contusion to the head.

What would have happened if Churchill had died And why did he almost die?

Some of you came here because you're eating the wrong way.

Some of you are here because you're thinking the wrong way.

In fact, all of us are here because we're thinking the wrong way, and we're eating the wrong way.

We're consuming things every day that necessitate coming to a place like this to begin thinking and looking the right way.

How many of you want to look the right way today instead of the wrong way?

Ever since the beginning of scripture, we have the story, Eve began to look the wrong way.

New start, really you're here for a restart.

How many of you knew it was a Christian-based program before you came?

Is that okay with you that it was Christian-based?

I don't know how someone come here without knowing that.

Yeah, the CHIP program is kind of like the New Start program on the road, yeah, exactly.

The New Start program is actually a restart program, and you're never gonna really restart unless God's in the picture.

You can come here to a program like this, And you can be surrounded by people that lead you to the New Star Cafeteria, but unless God changes your heart, you're going to revert back.

Depression and anxiety recovery, forget about it without God being in the mix.

Bible is central to both of these programs.

And I remember reading a quote by this guy Albert Ellis, 1 of the founders of what's called cognitive behavioral therapy.

And that's what New Start is, and that's what depression recovery is.

You thought you should be eating 6 eggs every day, and they told you no.

I think I can safely say that the Judeo-Christian Bible is a self-help book that has probably enabled more people to make more extensive, intensive personality and behavioral changes than all professional therapists combined.

And by the way, the first person people turn to when they're in trouble is not counselors or physicians or Psychiatrists its ministers.

And So ministers and Theology students and others have a great debt as well.

They need to know the Bible because the Bible is what really helps people change.

For unto us a child is born, for us the Son is given, the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Mighty, Counselor.

Mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

So today, I wanna look at a passage with you that's really a counseling passage.

So I invite you to turn your Bibles to Psalm 25.

Olaf, Beth, Gemel, Doleth, Heth, Was, Zayin, Heth, Teth, Koth, Limun, Nuh, Samoth, Peh, Koth, Reth, Shin, Sin, Tau.

Why does it have 22 verses based on that hint?

It's based on the acrostic of a Hebrew alphabet.

Now if you want a longer acrostic, go to Psalm 119.

It has the alphabet letter, and then it has 8 verses.

And how they taught their children growing up the alphabet was by teaching them Psalm 119, all 176 verses, but each 1 went with each letter of the alphabet.

So when you were through, you memorized the longest song in the hymn book.

I could have turned those into Jeopardy questions for you, but I didn't.

Okay, so whenever you're looking at any passage, oh by the way, reading several books this summer and actually writing a book this summer, so that's why some of you haven't seen me, for other reasons as well you haven't seen me.

But reading a book on the history of Christianity and its impact on the world, and its impact even up to this day, and back to Churchill, you know when he would give his speeches when he was here in America and when he's in his own country, he said we're fighting for a Christian worldview.

We're fighting that Christianity won't be stamped out.

Hitler wanted to get back to the Teutonic gods of Germany, to the wanderlust, to the violence, to the raw power.

There's nothing wrong with death and killing, there's nothing wrong because of survival of the fittest.
