Why is the Sanctuary Important to This Generation?

Father in Heaven, today we're thankful that we can just come into your courts with Thanksgiving and with praise.

We can spend a few hours studying the sanctuary.

We ask that your Holy Spirit would be with us, that you would lead and guide us.

And we know that you can because you have, and you have through the truth of the sanctuary and so we thank you for that and we ask your spirit would be with us in christ's name we pray amen the sanctuary and this generation is what we're going to talk about first here Now I told you I'd teach you a song when I was down in Mexico doing a mission trip a few years ago.

They taught me a song so I'll teach it to you.

Don't you know, don't you know you are the temple?

Don't you know, don't you know you are the Temple.

You are the Temple of the Spirit of the Lord.

Don't you know, don't you know you are the temple don't you know don't you know you are the temple don't you know don't you know you are the temple you are the temple of the spirit of the Lord Think you can learn that?

When you sing this early in the morning, that's what happens.

So actually it's the middle of the night for me.

Have you ever heard this saying, the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

How many of you have ever heard that saying?

And the main thing, what is the main thing of scripture?

You know, another saying says, He who is everywhere is nowhere.

In other words, if you're not focused, if you don't have priority, if you don't know where you're headed, you're probably not going to get there.

And so, what is the main point of Scripture?

What would you say the main point of Scripture is?

Well, some people would say, well, love is the main thing.

Well if it's the greatest, how many of you think if it's the greatest it would have to be the main thing.

Well, some people would say, no, the cross is the main thing.

God forbid, save us in glory, save in the cross of Christ my King.

So some would say the cross is the main thing in fact, you know since about the 6th century before that They never did this people began wearing crosses in fact in some churches you go and they have the cross as the most prominent thing and Some hospitals you go and the cross is there in Christ is hanging on the cross So some would say the cross and I I think these are wonderful texts Paul says God forbid say by glory of anything but the cross.

Love's the main thing, the cross is the main thing.

Well, if you can't have anything else before him, probably he's the main thing.

Well, how many can see this question of what's the main thing?

And if we're going to keep the main thing the main thing we better know what the main thing is well let me look at another text with you in Hebrews chapter 8 Hebrews chapter 8 let's look together at it Hebrews chapter 8 and let's look there together Hebrews chapter 8 verse 1 now this Paul says is the main point of the things that we've been saying.

We have a high priest who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in the heavens.

So Paul says the main point of the things we've been saying.

Well, the Hebrews and the Hebrews as well.

I mean you know that this whole idea is to the Hebrews and the Hebrews had this question and their question was what's the main thing?

What what what does it mean that Christ has come right?

And so he he says though this is the main point of the things that we've been saying.

The total amount resulting when 2 or more numbers are added together.

So if you added everything up, this is the sum.

Let me suggest that all those other texts, the cross and God's love and everything else, if you add it up and you sum it up, it all can be found in the Sanctuary.

How many would think that's probably true?

The cephal- le- eon, or the, like we get cephalos, the head, so in other words the main point, the head, of the things that we've been saying is that we have a Christ who's in the sanctuary says verse 2 a minister of the sanctuary Hebrews 8 2 and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected and not man you say hallelujah so this is the main point now let's let's continue on here a little bit more who wrote most of the books in the Old Testament?

The longest book, of course, would be Jeremiah, it takes about 4 and a half hours to read that, and then you want to read Lamentations because you're crying because you read so long.

But anyway, so you got Jeremiah and Lamentations, right?

And how many chapters within those books of the Pentateuch we'd call them?

The Pentateuch, how many chapters in those books focus on the sanctuary?

So if you were to ask Moses what is the main point of the Bible, which of course when Moses wrote the Bible there weren't too many other things out there to read some might say the book of Job but you know he would say the main thing is the sanctuary, how many would agree with that?

Not where do you get the prophets, but who are the prophets?

Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, these are the major prophets the minor prophets, if you looked at them, What is the focus of the prophets?

Did they have anything to say about the sanctuary?

Now 1 of these things, the reason I'm bringing this up is some people say, why do you Adventists talk about the sanctuary so much?

There's not really that much in the Bible.

40 chapters in the first 5 books and the Old Testament prophets how many chapters do they devote to the subject of the sanctuary?

It's over 40 again as you just read through them you just go you put down you look at it go wow now how many think we can go through all 40 chapters this morning?

Yeah, maybe if we gave assignments and each of us were reading, we might be able to read it all.

But the prophets, they focused on it as well.

The majority of the festivals of ancient israel focused on the sanctuary in fact I might dare say all of them did we're gonna come back to this at the end we had all of the festivals on on earth and in heaven if you will that should be saying Passover and unleavened bread and wave sheath then Pentecost and trumpets and the day of atonement and the feast of booths all of these festivals focused and revolved around the sanctuary So every time they got together for a significant meal, like a festival, what were they thinking about?

Have you ever talked to someone and over and over again they start saying the same thing and you start thinking, maybe they're thinking about that.

This is the whole idea of advertising, you know, just like in the middle of everything you go, Coca-Cola comes up, Coca-Cola comes up, and then you finally think, wait a minute, maybe they're trying to get me to think about Coca-Cola no, they used to do it in such a way that you couldn't even see it on the screen, you'd see a movie and they'd have these friends, they wouldn't even see it, but they'd study that people would actually respond, because they subconsciously would see that but in the Old Testament festivals all of them focused on the sanctuary spring feast and then the autumn This is a harp that looks like it's an actual, I guess, an old harp.

This is not to harp on anything longer, but this is a harp.

From the internet, so I don't know exactly where it's from it's not it looks old enough to be David's actual harp but I don't think so what's that?

No it's a Jews harp yeah not a Jews harp Who wrote most of the Old Testament Psalms?

How many of those Psalms focused on the sanctuary?

The Sanctuary and the First Generation

Father in heaven, today we're thankful that we can again consider the sanctuary.

And we want to consider your work and your way.

And we thank you, and we come in Christ's name.

I looked up every text concerning generation in the Bible as I prepared for this particular series.

And there are generations that God loves every generation, but He has been longing to have a generation of youth for Jesus.

The first generation, 100% of them went astray.

And the second generation, 50% of them were homicidal.

And some generations, they just completely lost the whole generation.

He's found faithful people in each generation.

And I want to look back now at the first generation as we look at the sanctuary.

Now we just saw in our last time together that the the sanctuary is the main focus of the Bible we went through that and gave an overview, it's the main focus the Pentateuch, the Feast of the Prophets, the Psalms, Acts, Hebrews, the Gospel of John oh, I forgot to mention the Gospel of John Jesus' entire ministry is built around his coming to the feasts in the Gospel of John all built around the sanctuary revelation all focuses on the sanctuary like we saw in our overview in the first time so if you were not here too bad for you but you can get the notes by downloading from afco.org dot 0RGWW dot afco dot org or get the tapes or this dvds or cds or whatever they have the sanctuary then was focused on by william miller and all the advent pioneers we looked at that alan white received 11 visions concerning the sanctuary we looked a little bit some of those And the Adventist Church's sanctuary doctrine is its unique contribution to theology.

And we didn't get into that, but we will start getting into that.

I had 5 additional points in the last lecture that I did not cover.

So they will go in my last lecture but just to remind you Jay and Andrew said that the sanctuary is the central doctrine of the Advent system Uriah Smith said the same thing we just covered these things so we've seen then that the sanctuary doctrine is important in this generation and especially for the Adventist church but what we want to look at now is was it important in the first generation the sanctuary and its importance in the first generation here's a question for you What is the leading cause of death in America?

I ask this many times and everyone says heart disease, cancer, stroke.

The leading cause of death in America is sin.

And that is of course spiritual heart disease that then leads to death.

Most people say heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and of course those are wrong.

They are a result of the leading cause of death which is sin.

So it's kind of bad for those of you just here to start out on the wrong foot but hopefully you regain your composure.

The original plan, the original plan, generation number 1, Who created man?

Let us make man in our image and in our likeness.

In the beginning was the Word, the Word was?

And the word was not a god like our Jehovah's Witness friends would say but was God right now was he there the beginning to create yes in the beginning so Jesus was involved in creation who else was involved in creation Genesis 1.1 and 2 now the Spirit moved on the and it says in the beginning God, who's that?

So God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit were involved in creation.

And when it says let us, you know, make God, This is the wonderful truth of the triunity of God, right?

It's the same word, by the way, when it says in the Shema, Hear O Israel, our God is 1, Deuteronomy 6, 6, 6, 4-6, right?

The Shema, it's the same word as used in Genesis 2, 24.

And the 2 shall become 1 flesh, it's the same word, the Chad same word, so when someone gets married they become 1 and God is 1, He's a relationship, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit so they were involved in creation, didn't mean to do something on the trinity but since we were there might as well, now let's go look next who was man patterned after?

So God's original plan for generation 1 was people should be godly just like God.

Now look at Ephesians chapter 4 verse 24 and then also look at Colossians 3.10 I have it up on the screen but you can look up as well.

Ephesians chapter 4 verse 24 Read this with me up on the screen.

We're created according to God in true righteousness and holiness.

So He created us, His whole idea in creating us was to be in the likeness of God, truly righteous and truly holy.

So when it says, let us make man in our image, this was to be holy too.

Now look at Colossians chapter 3 verse 10.

But it's good for people who are encountering life's collisions.

Colossians helps understand the collisions and get out of them, alright?

Knowledge according to or after the image of Him who created Him.

So in other words, He wanted us to have knowledge of God, the knowledge of the Father, if you will, in the image of Him.

So to have the image is to have the mind of Christ, the mind of God, the mind of the Spirit.

This was God's plan for the first generation.

How many think this is a pretty good plan?

In other words, we were created to be like Jesus.

So the first GYC theme of be was not me, it was He way back before the tree okay so you have this this whole theme we're created to be, to be like Jesus.

This people I have formed for myself, they shall declare my praise.

So they were created in His image so they could give glory to His image, to His likeness, to His creation, His created works.

What kind of relationship did God desire to have with man?

Close, united, together, to know each other.

Isaiah 41 verse 8, Exodus 33 11, we'll look at those texts.

But you Israel are my servant Jacob whom I've chosen, the descendants of Abraham my friend.

He wanted us to be in friendship with him.

Face to face as a man speaks to his friend.

I would, John 17, 24, to add another text, that they be with me where I am.

So this whole idea, this was God's desire in the first generation to be in sanctuary but not just any part of the sanctuary, to be in the most holy place if you will that's the whole big picture what frustrated God's desire for humanity let's read it together, now the serpent was read with me, more cunning than any of the beasts of the field which the Lord God had made.

And he said to the woman, Hast God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the tree of the garden, but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest ye die.

Then the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die, for God knows that in the day that you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you'll be like God, knowing good from evil.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes and the tree desired to make 1 wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave to her husband with her and he ate.

She was the first 1 to push Macintosh apples, if you will.

She was the first 1, now this is not funny at all really, but she was the first 1, she says, look, you take this and you'll get high, as high as God.

So she's the first drug pusher right well what words of the Bible used to describe what Adam and Eve did.

The Sanctuary and the Exodus Generation

Father in heaven, we're thankful today we can study again.

And you've said your way is in the sanctuary.

You've said it's a central truth to be studied and that harmonizes all the other truths.

And we're thankful that we can again study it today.

Alright brother is going to start us out here.

Earthly pleasures vain would call me, I would be like Jesus.

Nothing worldly shall enthrall me I would be like Jesus be like Jesus this my song in the home and in the throng be like Jesus all day long I would be like Jesus all the way from earth to glory.

I would be like Jesus telling o'er and o'er the story.

I would be like Jesus, be like Jesus, this my song, in the home and in the throng be like Jesus all day long I would be like Jesus we'll come back if you're going to sleep we'll sing some more okay we've looked this morning we looked at in the first time we looked at the sanctuary and this generation we saw that the major message of the Bible in the prophets and in the Psalms and everywhere else oh by the way, if any of you, is this the first time you're here?

If you haven't filled out a card, we're going to have a little drawing for sanctuary at the end of this lecture So if you haven't filled that out and you want to get it done, I'll pick it up at the end.

So the sanctuary in this generation, the first generation, the Exodus generation now is what we're going to be talking about.

And by the way, as you talk about generations in the Bible, as you study that text all the way through, there are some generations that God really got upset with.

And the Exodus generation is 1 of those generations that God really was kind of upset with.

In fact, I looked up, like I said, every single verse in the Bible about generations.

And multiple times there is this reference to the generation of the Exodus where God was saying, I don't like what they did.

And the reason he didn't like it is because here he drew near to them in the sanctuary experience and even though he draws that near to them, you know some people say, oh if I only had a miracle, oh if I only had this happen, oh if I only had that happen, then I'd believe God.

They had seen miracles every day and yet what?

They would always reject him so he basically said this generation will not go to Canaan so he can be happy with a generation or not happy and he wants to be happy with each generation but that generation there's a lot of things to be learned from that so we're gonna study that generation and hopefully not make the same mistakes today so the Exodus generation we've already prayed for those of you just come in so you're going to have to pray on your own but we believe that our prayer covered you the sanctuary and the exodus generation oh wait, minuet I guess I'm just doing a little review we talked about how in our first lecture the main thing is the sanctuary message.

It's the main point, the things we've spoken of.

Let me just make sure that This is not all the wrong document.

We also talked about how the main measure, oh that's the wrong document, that's why it's not working out for us.

When I first got there, there was no church, none of these buildings, but we just met in this little room.

Then this sanctuary was built by God's grace during that time.

But we brought out that lifestyle, life-size model of the sanctuary you see from Oklahoma Academy.

Can you see how many people, they just beat this path down as they went from place to place and every person was given a basically a 55 minute Bible study and from that we had 6 people right after that that went in a Bible study, well we had many, but 6 of those were baptized from that just 1 exhibit, Only there for 1 week.

So this is an evangelistic tool as well, dealing with the sanctuary.

And this was the tent where they sold books.

This is where they talked about the high priest garb.

And here's someone that was cut off from the camp of Israel.

So there's the Jebusites, the Amalekites and all the otherites.

Okay, so we're going to talk now this time about the Exodus sanctuary.

So, this morning we said that the main point was the sanctuary message, and in our second time together we looked at the sanctuary of the first generation.

Alright, the sanctuary during the exodus.

Now in this lesson what we're going to see is that God rescued his people from Egypt and he led them to his mountain sanctuary you see in the Bible there's 2 mountains there's the mountain of destruction Armageddon, Har means mountain, Megeddon means destruction so there's the mountain of destruction and there's Mount Zion and they were worshipping at a false mountain back then in Egypt they were worshipping at the pyramids you know they had all these false mountains around them and what we're going to see is how God had victory over the false gods and mountains of Egypt and brought people to himself and to his mountain sanctuary so the first sanctuary we saw in scripture was the sanctuary in the exodus and the second was going to be this mountain sanctuary now what situation were God's people in before they escaped?

Bondage, somewhat self-imposed in some ways because they had also imbibed on the things in Egypt as well and let's look at this text together, read it together with me on the screen.

Now these are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt.

Now there arose a new king over Egypt who did not know Joseph.

And he said to his people, look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.

Come, let us deal surely with them lest they multiply and it happened in the event of war that they also join our enemies and fight against us and so go up out of the land so they had these Hebrews there and Hebrews they call them the Hicksas and in the ancient documents and they discovered that they may be leaving and they didn't like that whole idea so they wanted to enslave them therefore they set taskmasters over them with their burdens and they built for feral supply cities Pithom and Ramses and you can see those those cities today and you can also see a place that was evacuated through drainage and what not by someone who was called Moses who was called Joseph in the ancient documents you can see actually where he reverted the Nile was actually growing grain to get ready for that 7 years of famine which you can also see archaeologically they have discovered where there was an actual seven-year famine in Egypt what did God's people do as a result of this bondage let me read this with me now it happened in the process of time that the king of Egypt then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage and they now you know that text right there, I'll just say all the way through thought maybe she's gonna hide all the way through the all the way through the come out come out wherever you are all the way through the scriptures whenever you cry out God hears you isn't that a good thing and so they cried out God hears them and He hears their groanings, He remembers their covenant.

Notice who He remembers their covenant with?

Abraham, Isaac and Israel or Jacob who He's called before.

Of course he sent Moses come now therefore I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people the children of Israel out of Egypt But moses said to god who am I that I should go to fail that I should bring the children of israel out of egypt I mean really the question should be put the most of who else is going to go I mean the guy was just totally prepared for this and you're totally prepared or does that call you too And I think he is calling you some places.

If you'd like to stay around here, I'm sure the conference wouldn't mind it because they're going to have a lot of leads after you go out and knock on people's doors tomorrow they're kinda worried about that but Matt's gonna be here following all those leads up right with the people from Maplewood you don't know well, maybe not then what were they not allowed to do or not were they not being allowed to do let's look at the text together keep ourselves awake Exodus chapter 5 verse 1 and 5 what were they not being allowed to do now this is an interesting text of course in the book of Exodus, X means out, Odos means the metered measured way out where we get the word odometer so in Exodus chapter 5 verse 1 afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh thus saith the Lord let my people go that they may hold a feast a shakag literally to me in the wilderness and the Pharaoh said who is the Lord that I may should obey his voice to let and let Israel go I don't know the Lord nor will I let Israel go and they said the God of the Hebrews has met with us please let us go 3 days journey into the desert sacrifice to the Lord our God in other words have a sanctuary service basically and he will tell us a test lest he fall upon us with pestilence and with the sword.

Then the king of Egypt said to them, Moses and Zenair, why do you take the people away from their, what's it say?

And Pharaoh said, look, the people of the land are many now, and you make them what?

You're taking them out for a Sabbath day we can't have that, more bricks, more straw more mortar, so here you have this appeal to not only go worship but worship on the Sabbath day, a rest day if you will does that sound like sanctuary imagery to you?

Yes and so that was a situation so God's solution because of the pollution was for the delusion.

In other words, he said, look, I'm going to take you out of Egypt.

And of course he had foretold that this would happen.

And right to the day, 430 years to the day, they were going to leave Egypt.

And like I said, the word Exodus is made up those 2 words X meaning exit or get out we have X right here I mean the room is filled with Exodus imagery and Odos which means the metered measured way odometer right God wanted to lead any would follow him out of out of Egypt step by step you know he doesn't jerk people out, God's not a jerk, He doesn't jerk people out, but he leads them step by step you know if you're working with somebody in a Bible study you don't say hello my name's Don and we'd like to baptize you and have you be a member of the Adventist church because that's not the right step if you do that they're gonna take a step a couple steps back and so god was going to lead his people step by step what 10 things did god do to get them out and why?

Look at this is interesting exodus 12:12 for I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast, and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment.

I am the Lord." How many times did he execute judgment against the gods of Egypt?

Now there were more gods, there were 80 or 90 gods, but he chose 10, the top 10.

Give me top 10, top 10 gods, any gods, top 10 gods on the board.

And he went, man, I'm going to go after those gods.

I'm going to demonstrate how ridiculous those gods are you know 10 now why did he do that because numbers 33-4 says this for the Egyptians were bearing all their firstborn whom the God had killed among them and also their gods whom the Lord executed judgment Now I wanted to get to the Numbers 33.4.

This triggered my mind, and so I wanted to just put it on for the tape.

The Lord said, I have pardoned according to your word, but truly as I live, all earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.

Because all these men who have seen my glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness and yet have put me to the test these 10 times and have not heeded my voice." The number 10 is always a key number.

10 commandments to show complete obedience to God, 10 times rejecting God, so it's complete disobedience to God.

And you know if you break 1 you break them all.

But in the Exodus they left but they ultimately were successful.

The Core Truths of the Sanctuary for All Generations

Father in heaven, we're indeed grateful that your way is in the sanctuary, that you wanted to make a sanctuary to dwell among us.

And that started in Genesis, as we saw the sanctuary there in Genesis.

And it also took place there on Mount Sinai, and then was memorialized in the portable sanctuary during the Exodus and we're thankful for that but we also are thankful that today you have a sanctuary and as we study more about the ins and outs of the sanctuary we ask you your presence would be with us in Christ's name, Amen.

Alright, you know, the sanctuary is a wonderful tool to use in evangelism.

And it is basically the reason this church exists.

In time events, all the other things that you can be studying here only make sense if you understand the sanctuary.

And 1 of the things that I did over the last couple years in the past or it was I invited Messiah's mansion to come how many of you have heard of them and there's flyers up here if you haven't already gotten them and they go around and they put up this life-size replica And they also have some other things they gave me to tell you about if you want to be involved in doing that now This is what I would say to you.

I've written a tour My tour notes for that sanctuary tour that I gave what happened was I started to give the sanctuary tour, you know, just kind of like, I don't know, just kind of just, you know, just doing it.
