But we try to be real, we're just normal.

And we're just wanting to study the Bible and share our thoughts and led by the Holy Spirit.

So Israel, pray for us and we'll get into it.

Our Father in heaven, we have this great opportunity and privilege to study your word today.

And so we pray that you would speak to us individually and corporately in Jesus name we pray, amen.

Joshua 24 and Jonathan, let's start from verse 1 and let's see how we approach this text.

Joshua 24, then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and called for the elders of Israel for their heads, for their judges and for their officers.

And they presented themselves before God.

And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahar, dwelt on the other side of the river in old times, and they served other gods.

Then I took your father Abraham from the other side of the river, led him throughout all the land of Canaan and multiplied his descendants and gave him Isaac.

To Esau, I gave the mountains of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.

Also, I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt according to what I did among them.

Afterward, I brought you out." Stop there because this is a longer passage and I wanna get to all of it.

What's going on in chapter 23 and chapter 24?

Yes, so as you mentioned, We're getting near to the end of this particular part of the race, the land has been conquered.

And Joshua, who was young and strong and fighting all these battles, the inevitable happened, he's about to die.

And so now the nation is going through this other kind of transition of leadership.

And you would think Joshua would want people to remember, remember how I led you with these conquests and remember the battles that I fought and set up a pillar to himself.

No, he is setting the groundwork for what is most important and that is a commitment to God.

And he's reminding them of their beginnings, because a lot of times we tend to forget where we come from.

And he mentions, you know, your fathers, Abraham and Terah, and they used to worship other gods.

Remember, these were the descendants of Shem.

These were supposed to be God's people, but along the way, they forgot the true God and were worshiping these idols and God pulled them out of that.

And so Joshua is reminding them, don't forget where you came from.

And your fathers used to live a certain way, you are called now to a different sort of life.

The beginning of the book starts off with, they cross the river and they get the stones of remembrance.

And it's kind of a remembering motif in the beginning at the end here.

And right before that, Moses in Deuteronomy gave them a whole book essentially of remember what's going on.

It's funny, because I have kids now and they're 3 and 2 and 0, we have a newborn, but we had my 2 girls, I put them down to bed almost every night and they always want to hear stories and they want to hear stories about my life.

Tell a story of Papa when Papa was small and they want to hear the same stories over and over again.

And then tell, you know, they want to hear the story of how Papa and Mama met.

But I remember when I would read the scripture and I'm like, okay, here we go again.

But you know, it's not like that happened all the time, but it happened in significant moments.

And it's important because first of all, we forget.

I'll be the first to admit, I forget all the time, everything.

And, but to remember how God has led us in the past, to remember his faithfulness throughout time, to recognize his leading, because often we don't realize his leading until after the fact.

These are, I think, very crucial exercises, especially in a day and age where we're always looking forward, always looking at what's gonna happen next, what's the next big thing, the future, future, future.

Let's go to Mars, let's have robots, AI, all this stuff.

You look at a society, where you are as a society right now, you know, this is not a new thing.

This has happened before in the Roman empire and other empires that have fallen.

And so I think God understands the importance of remembering and wants us to remember specifically because God is not interested so much in cycles.

He's interested in progress and in leading us closer and closer to his, you know, into the fullness of his kingdom.

So even though it may be like, okay, here we go again, when we read scripture, it's an important exercise.

And in a way, I guess I could learn from my kids, like, tell me the story again, let me remember again.

Because I'm very much a person that looks forward and like, okay, what can we do next?

Looking back, there's great value in that.

And for these people too, they didn't have access to all of this stuff that we have.

Like we could just Google and Wikipedia and- Photo albums.

Yeah, and all the stuff that happened for them.

It's the very rare occasions when everyone is coming together and recounting the story.

So this was something that was monumental for the people to gather and to hear what used to happen.

Yeah, and I think in the West and modernity, we look for propositional truth.

And so like, we roll our eyes and we sigh, and we're like, I have to go with this story again.

We just wanna know, and in a sense, and in a sense, that's kinda what we're doing in Bible study, we're like, hey, in verse 2, your fathers, they dwelt on the other side of the river.

So, I mean, really what he's saying is, don't serve other gods.

But if you say that, we don't remember that.

Right, that just goes, Sometimes it just goes over our heads.

It's not really, it's like, okay, I know.

But when you tell it in the story, like your fathers, you know, remember, and it was, it was Tara.

Remember, we haven't heard Tara in a long time.

And then Neor, man, that's back in Genesis.

I'm like, they were on the other side of the river.

They were on the other side, far on the other side, and they serve idols.

So then hearing this, you're hearing a story like, wow.

And then the lesson just becomes more of an innate part of who you are, like, oh, they used to serve idols, but now we're on this side of the river, and so Now I'm not gonna, you know, it's just a lot more deeper rather than don't serve idols.

Right, because it's story is something that sticks.

Story, you learn the lessons in a real fleshed out way.

Alright, I hope it stays that way over the next hour.

In the morning I was at the nature center.

With the animals and So they had me downstairs with all the safari animals I'm from Kenya So I'm trying to figure out if that was intentional or what But I'm not there anymore so it's alright, it's alright.

They say I have a friend he told me that, he's also Kenyan he told me that he was in Kenya and an American friend sent him a photo of a lion in the zoo in the zoo and he said that's not a lion that's a loser the losers got caught if you want to come see real lions You're invited to Kenya amen But enough about Kenya So thank you for coming We'll we'll dive into today's topic.

It's called the just man's Kryptonite the just man's kryptonite.

Let's pray Father thank you so much for this gathering of men.

Thank you for the blessing of today's program.

We thank you for the message during the divine hour and the fellowship, the lunch.

And we pray that and we believe that all these things are for a reason for those who are here today that you would allow us to apply these things to our lives that you give us the grace the power and even now May your spirit speak to each and every 1 of us individually.

Speak to us and also may we may also speak through us that we may bless those who are not here today with a message in Jesus name Amen.

Now, if you're a good Adventist, you might not understand what the word kryptonite is so allow me to take some time to explain to you what it is.

It's not a it's not an element on the periodic table it's It's something else.

In order to explain kryptonite I must explain to you who these men are here.

I love Maryland Men of Faith because it is a multi-generational gathering of men.

And because of that, 1 of these men will appeal to you more.

Does anyone recognize the man on the left?

Yes, Christopher Reeves, the first Superman on scene on screen.

Millennials like myself might recognize Henry Cavill in the middle there.

And Just this recently, there was a movie that came out this year with David Corenzweig.

Now across all these men, the story is the same.

This comes from another planet and he has super strength, super speed, he can fly, he has x-ray vision, he can do all these amazing things.

But most importantly he has a good heart.

It's said that Superman would even save a little small animal if he had to.

He is 1 of the most powerful superheroes in the superhero world.

So kryptonite to summarize is this radioactive element from his home planet that when he is exposed to kryptonite he's not only he not only loses his power and is as powerful as any other human but he's sometimes even weaker than a regular human.

So obviously you can see here he's not liking it very much.

Kryptonite represents for Superman mortality.

It represents humanity and it represents his limits.

The question today is what is your kryptonite?

As a mental health therapist, I work with a lot of men I think I mentioned it earlier today during the teaser.

I see men of all walks Adventist, non-adventist, Christian, non-Christian people who struggle with addictions and non addictions And what's most interesting is when I work with men who are successful in the areas of ministry.

I work with pastors, I've worked with missionaries in foreign countries, I've worked with leaders.

And it's interesting to see that What you see in the public world is not what you see in the inner world It's interesting to see that there's unique weaknesses That people like like we all here men of faith struggle with silently and That is that is the kryptonite that I'd like us to explore today.

James White was what we call the Renaissance man.

He was an active father and husband, often taking up for his sick wife when his wife was unwell taking care of the kids he was a handyman and a builder from a very young age and all through his career he'd even when he ran the publishing house he would he would help fix up the printers I you know I somehow I someday hope to be a handyman and a builder.

In fact, he was called the man who could not wait.

It says, God forbid that I should fold my arms in lazy lock while sinners are sinking into eternal night this is the kind of preacher James White was he wasn't afraid to preach anywhere and to anyone And he traveled land and sea even at his own cost not paying himself a salary so he could preach the gospel.

He was a GC president 3 times and an administrator.

He started hospitals, he started schools, and he started a publishing house and ran it successfully with many employees.

He was an abolitionist, he wrote extensively against the ills of his time, such as slavery, and of course he was a writer and editor and published hundreds and hundreds of articles.

They don't make men like James White these days.

We don't see men who did as much as he did today and much of what we benefit from in the Adventist Church is due to the likes of people like James White would you agree?

In fact his wife at the end of his life said he had done the work of how many?

What do you say it was a pretty super man?

All right, but even James White had a weakness.

You know, they say if you really want to know who a man is, ask his wife.

There's no 1 who knows you better than your wife.

And so James' wife, who we all know as Elroy, said this, My husband's last sickness came upon him in consequence of what?

Bearing burdens which God had warned him he ought not to bear.

My question for you is are you bearing burdens which God has not told you to bear because this is what killed James White at the young age of 60 the young age of 60 we are fortunate to not only have the words of his wife but during his funeral we actually hear from Ellen about what he had said 2 weeks before his death.

He lived all this long life of doing so much for the Lord.

2 weeks before he dies, he comes to these realizations.

Do you feel like those realizations must be pretty crucial?

So he was walking in a garden and he would reflect often on his life.

I'm not sure if he knew he would be dying in 2 weeks.

14 The Good News of the Judgment

Heavenly Father, thank you for your word.

Thank you for your spirit, for the grace that you give us through Jesus Christ.

I just ask that your Holy Spirit would be here with us, blessing us and guiding our study.

Okay, so far we have learned that there are 2 big types or divisions in the sanctuary services.

1 are the daily services, which happened every day in the courtyard here and in the holy place.

Various services were conducted, but they provided forgiveness for sin and cleansing from sin, and that was a type of atonement.

Then there was also the yearly service which happened here in the most holy place.

That only happened once a year, and it completed the work of atonement that was begun during the daily services.

So the yearly services complete and fulfill what God began in the daily services.

Turn with me if you wouldn't mind, I hope you have your Bibles, to Leviticus chapter 4.

In Leviticus chapter 4, we have the various sin offerings, which were they part of the daily services or part of the yearly services, the sin offerings?

And I want you to notice something about the daily services, sin offerings.

For instance, if you look at verse 13 of Leviticus chapter 4 verse 13, And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly and they have done somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which should not be done and are guilty, verse 14, when the sin which they have sinned against is known, then the congregation shall offer a bullet for the sin.

These are various sin offerings for various groups.

Or if his sin wherein he has sinned come to his knowledge, he shall bring an offering.

And if any 1 of the common people now, sin through ignorance, which he has done, somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord, concerning things which ought not to be done and be guilty, or if his sin, which he hath sinned, come to his knowledge, then he shall bring his offering, a kid of the ghost, a female without blemish, for his sin." So we see that God brings to our attention sin in our lives so that we can ask for forgiveness and have cleansing for those sins.

That's important because in the Day of Atonement, the focus is not so much on what you may call known sins.

Known sin are this, think of sin as an iceberg.

You have The part of the iceberg which is above the water, that's known sin, you can see it.

But then there's a part of the iceberg that's below the surface that's unknown sin, and you don't really have an idea of it, right?

In the yearly services, God deals with all sin, the record of sin, known sin, but he gets to a deeper sin that we often do not see.

It's not the same cleansing in the daily services.

Well, I'll get to that later on in our study.

So from what we learned in our last presentation from Pastor Corey, the yearly services had a beginning point.

Daniel 8.14, until 2, 300 days, then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

So it's a dated prophecy that would give us the beginning of the cleansing of the sanctuary.

And it was started, that date was started from 457 BC.

And if you add 2, 300 years to that, the day for the year principle, you come to 1844.

And that's when the Day of Atonement began, which we are in right now.

Now turn with me, if you wouldn't mind, to Revelation chapter 10.

This chapter is dealing with the Day of Atonement, and it's important that we recognize that since the Day of Atonement has begun, there are no more timed prophecies.

I don't know if you were aware, but today was supposed to be the beginning of the rapture.

People are trying to give dates for the rapture.

People try to give dates for the second coming of Christ, try to give dates for, you know, different things.

When the close of probation will be, and we cannot date any more prophecies since 1844.

Let's read verses 2 and 6 of Revelation 10.

And he had in his hand a little book open and he set his right foot upon the sea and his left foot upon the earth.

That little book is the prophecies in Daniel that had been sealed.

You'll see the same angel with his foot on the sea and on the land.

And then go to verse 6, and swear by him that lives forever and ever who created heaven and the things that are therein and the earth and the things that are therein and the sea and the things that are therein that there should be time no longer.

That means that that prophetic period, 1844, had come to its completion and now there's no more prophetic time where you can have a start date and an end date.

So we need to avoid that because that is dangerous and it reduces confidence in the word of God.

So In our study today, the good news of the judgment, we find out that the investigative judgment is needed because it brings an end to sin and it brings an end to sin permanently.

In the daily services, you don't see that, do you?

But the Day of Atonement, which was once in the year, brings an end to this whole, these services.

And at the end of that Day of Atonement, there was no more sin in the camp.

And that is the point of the investigative judgment.

Just by way of a quick review, on the Day of Atonement, there was 2 goats, the Lord's goat and a scapegoat.
